"Anshhhhhhhhhhh!" Her scream ripped through the air like lightning cracking through the clouds. She ran. Her sandals slapped against the wet asphalt, slipping once—pain didn't matter. People had begun to gather, murmurs and gasps blending with honks and distant sirens.
"Hatt jaaiye! Hatto!" ("Move! Move aside!") she pushed her way through, breath heavy, vision blurred by tears and rain.
There he was.
Her Ansh.
Lying on the wet road. Blood mixing with rainwater, his body still, lips trembling with a weak smile.
"Ansh..." her voice cracked as she dropped to her knees. Her trembling hands cradled his head, gently resting it on her lap. "Ansh... uth jao please... dekho main aayi hoon... I'm here..." she sobbed.
She looked up frantically, saw the driver who hit him—a middle-aged man, pale, shaking. "Mam... I'm sorry... It's—"
"Just help me! Hospital... please, mujhe hospital leke jaana hai!" ("I need to take him to hospital!")
He raised both hands helplessly. "My car's full... I've called an ambulance. It's on the way."
Mishti's glare could have cut through stone. But right now, all she cared about was the man in her lap.
"Ansh..." her fingers stroked his hair, wet and sticky with blood. She held his face, trying to stop his eyelids from falling. Her tears dropped onto his cheeks.
He blinked slowly, eyes fluttering under heavy lids. He smiled. Weak, but so full of love it made her heart break. "Kaha tha naa... chor ke jaogi toh mar jaunga..." ("I told you... if you leave me, I'll die...") His voice was barely a whisper, yet it hit her louder than a scream.
"Chup... chup bilkul mat bolo... ambulance aa rahi hai... aankhein mat band karna haan Ansh... please..." ("No, no please don't speak... ambulance is coming... don't close your eyes, Ansh, please...")
He smiled again. Fainter this time. His lips moved but no sound came. Then—he closed his eyes.
Her heart sank.
"Ansh... Ansh... ANSH!" She slapped his cheeks softly, desperately. "Aankhein kholo... please... tumhe kuch nahi ho sakta... tum mujhse aise nahi ja sakte... please..."
No response.
Everything around her blurred. The crowd, the noise, the cars. All she saw was him.
And then suddenly—like a broken chain pulling back to her mind—
He wasn't Ansh. Who was he?
Her hands froze. Her sobs stilled for a moment. She stared. She looked at his face... and it hit her.
