I leaned against the daffodil yellowed walls that adorned the quaint living room. Across from me sat Dante in all his glory, eerily still and yet those black orbs danced, tracing my every move. He was frozen in time again, a snapshot my mind captured to store within our endless time capsule. Silence engulfed us, unlike previous embraces it wasn't suffocating, but peaceful. There was no need to rush into a conversation that would only bring a thousand more questions so I waited patiently eating the breakfast we picked up. The pancakes were still warm, chocolate chips melted on my tongue when I rubbed the fluffy dough against the roof of my mouth to experience the burst of flavor.
"This is Dangerous," My eyes flickered away from my plate when the silence was shattered.
"What is?" I licked the residual ghost crumbs from my most recent bite off my bottom lip and I noticed his gaze drop to the movement. The chemistry was strong, even without the mate bonds influence, eliciting temptation in every move regardless of the innocent intent.
"Us." I looked down at my food, stuffing an even larger bite into my awaiting mouth. My heart stuttered as it skipped a beat. I worriedly paused mid chew afraid that it would give up at any moment. I swallowed hard and it wasn't just the food that made the task difficult. I knew Dante and I could see the cogs turning in that head of his, running wild with endless possibilities all leading to my ultimate death.
"Don't," I warned him. I'm the one not ready to have this discussion for once. To just pretend, even if only for a second, that we were a normal couple enjoying the bliss that came from each other's company. There was no constant tug of war between doing what's right or what feels right. Here within this tiny space that illuminated brighter than the Sun's morning glow I was ready to pretend our future was just as bright.
"Solange, this is dangerous. Teegan already knows you're my mate. The lines are blurring and I need more time,"
"What was the point of that if people are still going to find out," I pointed my fork in the general direction of his chest where the blood tattoo was ingrained into his flesh.
"He suspects soulmates, not chosen. There's a difference in our world." I shrugged.
"Better that than him knowing Orpheus is out," It sounded more like a question than a statement and I had the sudden urge to run away when Dante glared in my direction.
"Not better," He hissed. "Mate. The elders will want blood. Yours specifically. When the elders command, the order follows. It'll be a fucking blood bath. I'll kill each and every one of them."
"I don't understand. Why do they care about me, about you?"
"Control. It's not just you or me they care about. It's everyone. They refuse to taint our species by bonding with others. Thousands have fled and gone into hiding for centuries fearing the order will come for them. My family are members of the royal guard, high ranking members, which puts an even bigger target on our backs. Solange, this entire situation can blow up in our face in a matter of seconds and we could be oblivious to it all."
"What are you saying Dante?"
"You need to be invisible and stay as far away from the Supernatural world."
"And your mother?" His pale hands came up to his face dragging them down , a frustrated groan parting his lips. The blood oath I unknowingly sealed with his mom was a huge factor. How could I stay away if she was to train me in combat even if she didn't remember why.
"We need to visit Magdalena," My confused stare prompted him to keep going. "She gave me the rune and serum."
"What will she do?"
"Break the oath."He began to get up from his seated position and I quickly followed. In every book I ever read a Blood oath was near impossible to break and if by chance there was a slight possibility it always came with detrimental consequences. "Then we go from there." Luckily my bed had already been delivered and I had nothing better to do. I nervously followed Dante out the door and to his sleek car anticipating who or what Magdalena could possibly be.
"Is she human?" I found myself asking as he peeled away from the parking lot and surprisingly drove the speed limit. He looked over at me and frowned.
"She's breaking a blood oath and you think she's human." I smiled sheepishly fighting the urge to look away. There are no stupid questions, isn't that what everyone's always saying.
"How will she do it? Turn the car around!" I began to panic, my overactive mind imagining the worst possible scenario.
"What the fuck," His heating glare slid my way and it's scathing touch didn't go unnoticed, but that clenched jaw is what drove me absolutely mad. "And don't fucking look at me like that,"
'I don't want to go anymore."
'I don't care,"
"Dante it will be painful,"' I slapped my hands against my thigh without thinking and immediately regretted it. There was a stinging aftershock and all for nothing. My physical frustration had Dante turning a dismissive eye. He focused on nothing but the road, no longer driving like an eighty year old grandma. "I swear if this shit hurts, I'm going to purchase the most pain inducing potion and force feed it down your throat!" He laughed. The little bitch.
"They are called serums and elixirs. Magdalena would have your throat if she heard you,"
"What's wrong with potions?" He smirked.
"Apparently that word is for amateurs. In other words, humans.' I was highly offended.
"You've got to be kidding me,'
"Not even a little bit. I hate to admit it but supernaturals are more sensitive than even humans. Always getting offended and wanting to go to war. Always wanting to measure cocks and see who's bigger. A fucking pissing contest if you ask me."
'Sounds like we have more similarities than I originally thought. Humans can be vile creatures ,' He nodded but turned serious. "It shouldn't hurt, but then again we're trying to break a blood oath here."
"What could possibly go wrong," Sarcasm was heavy in the air and the quivering nerves in my voice didn't go unnoticed.
"Well for starters..." I laughed knowing he was only half kidding. We were putting a lot of trust into this lady at this point she knew more than I'd expected. Dante wanted to keep this whole thing under wraps but he's been to see this lady more times than I can count tonight alone.
"Shut up Dante," I gnawed my lip wondering exactly how much trust Dante had in this lady. "You trust this lady? With your secrets?" It escaped me and like vomit I couldn't swallow it back down.
"She owes me a favor and it's time to collect." He didn't offer any more details and I didn't ask. Not every stone was meant to be turned, some secrets were best to leave hidden. The ride turned silent, and like withering coils dread creeped closer. I had a bad feeling, call it a premonition, but tonight would not go as planned.
