I walked into the house alone leaving the door unlocked for Dante as I turned on all the lights.
Although I was no longer deathly afraid of Dante I was still wary of him. Coffee. That'll help settle my nerves. I thought restlessly as I poured water into the kettle and set it on the stove.
I felt his stare before I heard him. He was silent, blending into the nonexistent shadows as he stepped into the kitchen.
"I'm surprised I didn't have to meet you at the door to invite you in," I joked half serious as I turned to face him leaning against the sturdy counter.
It earned me a smirk as he made himself comfortable, his knees almost touched his chest as he lowered himself into the small seat at the kitchen table, and sat with his back against the wall. He was too big for the chair and I was afraid the legs would snap from baring all his weight as he stretched his legs in front of him.
"It depends, there are circumstances where we would need an invitation but this isn't one of them." I raised my eyebrows waiting for him to elaborate but he never did.
"Care to explain," I busied myself with prepping the french press and remembered my manners as I turned to face him again.
"Do you want anything?" He smiled tightly and shook his head.
"I don't think you'd like what I have in mind." I frowned as I heard him whisper yet.
"So no," I shrugged my shoulders. "So why didn't you need an invitation,"
"It's complicated. Every scenario is different but it all stems from the will of the human in this case you. You're not intentionally trying to keep me out. The will is a very powerful thing, like faith. I can sense your fear but it's not stronger than your desire." I almost choked on air as I stared at him.
"My what," He smirked in that god awful way that made me think sinful things.
"Your subconscious desire to be close to me is stronger than the fear you think you're feeling," I shook my head frantically.
"Dante I'm scared of you being here," He smiled knowingly.
"Yet, subconsciously you know that I won't hurt you. Why else would I be sitting here without an invitation?" He raised a single eyebrow in my direction.
"It's because your soul senses no real danger. That's why it's so complicated. If I were any other vampire there's no way I'd be allowed to enter but you granted me permission without even knowing it." I was confused as he seemed to be only uttering senseless riddles in my direction.
"I don't understand," He sighed as he leaned forward resting his elbows on the table and stared at me for a few minutes.
"Supernatural beings have wards and spells in place that protect them but those are intentional things that are put in place to keep unwanted things out. Humans have innate abilities that protect them from harm, from us supernaturals. Demons want your soul. Vampires want your blood. Witches and warlocks want to harvest the slight magic you possess. Fairies want your blood but for completely different reasons than we do. Werewolves want mates or sacrifices for their rituals." He hesitated slightly.
"Let me not even delve into all the other beings out there and how essential humans are for their way of life. You see every supernatural being out there needs humans in one way or another whether it's to harm them or protect them for their own selfish gain is to be debated. That's why your kind will never go extinct, contrary to what the fairytales have depicted, you are much more valuable than you were ever given credit for." I was hyperventilating as he mentioned all the creatures that existed in the vast world but I held my breath so he could keep explaining.
