It was a very hard task for Skylar to maintain a straight face throughout the day. She tried her best to concentrate on what the teacher was saying in front of the class or to listen to what Reese had to say about almost everything. Skylar nodded then and now and 'hmm' ed whenever she thought was necessary. It was almost as though she was trying to ignore the gigantic elephant, which was having a bath, in the middle of the room.
However Skylar tried, her mind aimlessly wandered towards Donald. She knew that she was reading more into the matter and was just worrying herself, but yet she could not compose her mind around who and what he was. She had never thought that she would be much interested in Donald, or let alone even think of him when he was not in the class. But that day proved her to be wrong.
Holding her books close to her chest and gripping her school bag for support, Skylar dragged her feet behind Reese as she gave an ear to her non stop chatter. Finally, after what felt like an eternity to Skylar, they reached the cafeteria and Skylar sighed happily, thankful that even now, Reese had stopped her banter.
"Anyway, tell me Sky," Skylar turned her head upwards to look at Reese. "What do you want to eat today?" she asked, her eyes already scanning the food area.
"Whatever you eat Reese," Skylar said without giving much thought about it.
Reese shrugged. "If you say so." she mumbled and went to join the long queue as Skylar occupied a seat on a vacant table near the far end of the cafeteria. After what felt like an hour, Reese joined her table, bringing a strong smell of horrible perfume along with her.
"What took you so long?" Skylar asked as Reese sighed dramatically and occupied the seat before her.
"Oh you know, just the usual fight for food," she shrugged as Skylar scrunched her nose.
"And what is that horrible smell?" she covered her nose with her sleeve as Reese rolled her eyes.
"This really big girl tried to push me," she said uninterested. "And I had to give all of my strength to not to lose my position in the queue." she tried to explain but Skylar did not yet understand how that ended her up like this. "And yes, she had this strong smell of – do you call this perfume?" she asked sarcastically as Skylar laughed. "She reeked of it." Reese made a face, looking as though she would faint from the smell. "Does it bother you, Sky?" she asked looking at Skylar as she shook her head.
"No, no. That's alright," she said, turning her eyes to look at the plate of food before her.
"Ooh pancakes," she licked her lips as she dug into a pancake which was closest to her. Reese rolled her eyes. She was right. It was Skylar's favorite.
The duo ate in silence as Skylar marveled at the wonderful taste of the pancakes as it slid down through her throat, wondering how it was even possible to taste as almost as her father's pancakes, forgetting all about her worries for a few minutes. Reese punctured holes in the delicious pancake with her fork, when Skylar looked up.
"That is not a sandwich, you know," she said angrily as Reese looked up at her puzzled. "It is a pancake. So treat it carefully." she indicated the pancake in her hand by her eyes and whispered the final word as though afraid that the food might hear her.
Reese laughed loudly looking at her expression and her eyes went towards the entrance to the cafeteria.
"JAKEYY," she screamed at once pointing towards the door, her eyes large in surprise.
Skylar, who had not been expecting this sudden turn of events or rather the sudden heart attack she was sure that she had received as Reese had screamed looking at the door, who was marveling at the plate of food before her, slipped to the floor from her chair and landed loudly on her back, scratching her palms.
