『 Home 』

We walked and my mind wandered to blissful thoughts of our return to Konohagakure. The very thought of returning brought such warmth, making me smile to myself without even realizing it. This dream of mine was then swiftly brought to a dead-end as Kakashi's very soft voice called my name.

Turning around from Naruto and Sakura in the middle, having one of their usual arguments, I slowed to let Kakashi catch up. "Did you need anything, Sensei?" I asked, turning to him.

The only sound was that of our walking, and for those moments, our steps were in sync. It was at this particular moment that Kakashi's even voice burst open, turning the moment to shatter it. "Nothing too big, just wanted to ask you something." He sounded casual.

Curious myself, I fell into the rhythm of my steps, giving him my full attention. "Oh? Sure," I wondered.

His eye crinkled a bit as he continued on. "What you said yesterday, about getting lost to madness, was there any context to that? Or just a random thought you had?"

I had paused, entertaining his question, taking the time to mull over his question before I answered. "Both, I guess," I admitted, expelling a deep breath. "I was not really thinking why I had asked at the time, but my mind may have been meandering on what's ahead in the future."

"Future?" Kakashi parroted interest building in his eyes, egging me to continue.

Sharing my thoughts and feeling a bit vulnerable with Kakashi, I wasn't so sure I should burden him with my uncertainties. Still, all it took was some gentle encouragement on his part, and here we go.

"Yeah, what's gonna happen with us, Naruto's dream of being Hokage, Sakura's dream to be with Sasuke." I trailed off as I realized what I had said.

"Continue," he urged softly.

I summoned the courage to express my concerns with Sasuke's focus on revenge towards our brother. "Sasuke wants to kill our brother,  that is his one goal and dream. What will happen with him and that journey?" I asked. "What if he goes crazy?"

Kakashi replied immediately, "That won't happen," he stated, from where he sat on the edge of the bed. "Because he has you and Naruto and Sakura and me to help him and bring him out of any dark holes he will slip into."

Mumbling my acknowledgement over the lump of worry in my throat, Kakashi's arm slid over my shoulder in a comforting gesture.

--

I sat on the railing, my legs pumping back and forth in a rhythmic motion that mirrored my rising impatience. Kakashi's chronic lateness didn't even surprise me anymore, but today seemed irksome above all. The greater surprise was Naruto's absence, though.

Then, finally, Naruto came into view. He walked fast, totally bypassing me to sit next to Sakura. A small ache stirred inside my chest, a feeling so foreign.

"Good morning, Sakura," Naruto chimped in his rather jolly voice.

Time was crawling by so slowly. The absence of our sensei was by now so conspicuous. Then, from above, Kakashi's voice, "Hello! Good morning! Today I got lost," Kakashi tried hard to seem convincing as he always did.

"Hey!" Sakura and Naruto shouted in annoyance at the same time before the sparkles got bigger in Naruto's eyes.

"Hey, hey, Kakashi Sensei! Recently, missions in Team 7 are just simple ones. Can't other more interesting missions be allotted to me for being active, using my Way of the Ninja and my soul, you know?" The frustration bubbled out of Naruto in his words full of eagerness for a challenge.

I really had to silently agree with him. Our recent missions had been tasteless, at best; not up to the excitement that Naruto desired.

Kakashi kicked casually again, raising a hand in a placating manner. "Yes, yes. I basically understand what you are trying to say."

Naruto turned around, shooting Sasuke a deadly glare back, and Sasuke matched it, glaring eyes just as fiercely. It was their silent argument, but none of the words spoken could challenge the other to a glare-fest.

Kakashi broke the tension, his outside voice piercing their stare-off. "Naruto, what are you doing? We are about to start our mission," he reminded them, his voice laced with amusement.

"Right! Let's go!" Naruto replied, overly enthusiastic, for a second forgetting about the exchange of glares made between Sasuke and him just seconds ago.

Sakura couldn't help but point their actions out. "You've been such a bother these days, Naruto," which clearly showed her irritation.

I mouthed a little smile to Sakura. "Let him be," I advised softly. "Right now, I'd rather have his yapping than this awkward tension. What about you?"

Sakura exhaled heavily, and her shoulders sagged. "I would've preferred the barking, too."

Our first mission was to do the ever-normal weeding, which we got through with minimal problems. That was before Naruto, ever true to himself, somehow managed to tip over a bed of flowers.

It then came to the next mission of clearing the trash along the riverbank. At a very unfortunate moment, Naruto slipped very near to the edge but was saved by Sasuke's quick reflexes.

Our third mission put us on dog-walking duty. The misfortune resulted in Naruto getting the most mischievous and obstinate canine. Even when he protested, he would not go without the dog.

We were on our way back from the mission when Naruto fell into a trap that eventually led to a couple of explosions, which sent him flying left and right. Sasuke and I went immediately to his side, supporting him as we helped him walk. Obviously, he was hurt but not down.

"You're so reckless, Naruto!" Sakura scolded.

I murmured softly, "Please be more careful next time, Naruto."

"Yeah, whatever. Misaki," Naruto grumbled in return.

Sasuke added with a smirk, "So much trouble."

Naruto could no longer take his irritation as he jerked himself from our holds and yelled, "Sasuke!!!" Sakura quickly stepped in, halting him from taking another step further. Sasuke was already walking away ahead, leaving me to follow and with Sakura and Naruto continuously bickering.

"The teamwork hasn't been going well lately," Kakashi said with a concerned look on his face.

"Oh right! Bad teamwork is Sasuke's fault! You always steal the show!" Accusingly, Naruto pointed at him.

That being said, Sasuke didn't even turn and retaliated, "You're the idiot who's supposed to avoid owing a great debt to me. In order for that to happen, you'll have to become stronger than me!"

Kakashik interrupted, "Well then, perhaps we should disperse. We do need to submit a report about this mission."

"Okay, then I'm going home," Sasuke said and turned on his heel to leave without another look.

Sakura runs up to Sasuke from behind me. "Oh! Hey! Sasuke, wait for me! Hey, how about- Why don't you and- Why don't we work on improving our teaming up together."

"You're just like Naruto. Well, if you have time to kill over me, why don't you practice Jutsu?" Sasuke added before he turned his back on Sakura. "To be frank, you're a lousy sight compared to Naruto's."

Sakura's face fell at Sasuke's blunt words, her hopeful expression replaced by crestfallen. There, she just stood, for a beat obviously surprised by his words, then tried to mount a weak smile. "Oh... okay," she murmured in shock.

I sat there in silence. She was really trying, though. But I just couldn't get mad at Sasuke. Ugly and blunt honesty was a bit brutal, but it was him. And he, in his own way, was right. Sakura was nowhere as strong as Naruto, and the sooner she finally came out, the better a chance she'd get at some time in her ninja development.

"Really?" Naruto huffed. "Bye, Misaki!" He just kept on waving at me, before he turned his attention to Sakura again, which in that instant the interest in Naruto stopped for me; I detached myself from him and excused myself away.

I nodded and had already turned my back to them, my footsteps lightly touching the earth as the ground between them and me elongated. Naruto's was a half there good-bye gesture that registered in my brain as my head. There was such detachment sitting in me that his jolly waving didn't so much as ripple the surface of that emotion.

I felt another spear of frustrated anger as I retreated from them, the familiar burn of it by now a more frequent visitor these days. However hard I strove for perfection, somehow Sakura would always manage to one-up me.

At the very moment that I turned the corner, two figures emerged right after I had left.

My senses atrophied simultaneously in search of whatever would be that source of this bad aura, which pressed down the air. No matter how hard I strained, I did not feel anything, therefore making me keep my guard up even as I watched the strangers that stood before me.

She was so confident, just standing easily with her fellow. While the male figure was impassive, his eyes still sharp and piercing, sending chills down my spine.

But where did that third presence come from?
