The air was tight with tension as we all held our breath, looking at Sasuke's Chidori penetrating through Gaara's supposedly impenetrable sand sphere. This silence was broken by Gaara's terrified scream.
"AHH! BLOOD! IT'S MY BLOOD!" His voice was shaking out of fear.
My eyes widened in pure astonishment. Could it be that Gaara, who had always been protected by his sand, had never seen his own blood? The very sight horrified him, body and soul.
Sasuke drew his hand back; a grotesque, sand-colored, blue-veined root burst forth from Gaara's wound. Gaara's defenses of sand collapsed, exposing him and leaving him vulnerable to attack, with a fresh wound to his shoulder, courtesy of Sasuke.
The scene unfolded; white feathers slowly drifting down from the sky, so delicate, yet full of bad omen. Genjutsu? My hands clasped together without losing a second as I focused my chakra. "Kai! Release!" I commanded, breaking the illusion.
My hands dropped to my sides as a million thoughts raced through my mind. What is going on?
I leaped down to Sasuke just as Temari and Kankuro rushed to Gaara's side. Gaara was doubled over, clutching his head in agony.
"Gaara, the plan—" their sensei started, his eyes widening in shock as he took in Gaara's state.
"Hey..." Temari's voice was unsure, filled with concern.
"What's wrong?" Kankuro asked, his anxiety growing as Gaara's pained groans echoed.
"Idiot! I can't believe he would try to undergo complete possession without waiting for the signal!" their sensei snapped, obviously frustrated.
Complete possession? What was Gaara possessed by?
Temari dropped to her knees next to Gaara, concern radiating from her. "He's having a counterreaction. He can't do it anymore!"
"Then what do you think we should be doing?! Do you want us to carry on without Gaara?!" Kankuro shot back, desperation and incredulity tinging his voice.
I'm calling it off! You two, take Gaara and withdraw for now!"
"Sensei! What about you?!" Temari's voice was urgent, frightened.
"I'm fighting. Now go!" he ordered, resolved, firm.
Sasuke turned to me; his face showed confusion. "What's happening?"
"It's obvious, isn't it?" I said, stepping up behind him. "The Chūnin Exam is over."
"What she said. You two, after Gaara and the others, now!" he ordered sharply. He turned his gaze on Sasuke next, his expression stern. "Sasuke, you've already reached the Chunin level. If you think of yourself as a Konoha shinobi, do something useful.
