"Things were different then, all is different now"

-Hard to Imagine, Pearl Jam

Gwen Stacy's eyes opened to a starry night above her-stars twinkling and shining brighter than she'd ever seen on a New York City night. The young woman's back was aching, and she realized why as she sat up: she had been laying on the concrete roof of a skyscraper.

She looked around in bewilderment, trying to remember how she'd gotten here. Gwen was wearing her spider-suit, but other than that she had no clues as to what was going on... was it...

"Does it really matter how you got here?" A voice asked, and Gwen looked around in search of it. "You're here now... time to respond."

Gwen saw nobody... her breathing grew heavier as this out-of-place setting began to freak her out, causing her to take multiple steps backwards until she ran into something.

She yelped and jumped backwards, immediately pressing her fingers to her web-shooter and firing a web. The webbing hit an outstretched hand, smothering it as its owner sighed at Gwen's anxiety. "I guess that's one way to respond..."

The hand lowered, and Gwen's anxiety spiked again: she was staring into the eyes of Peter Parker.

"Pete?" She asked, and he nodded with a smile.

"In the flesh." Peter announced proudly, then pursed his lips. "Actually... not really. I take that back."

So... I'm in another crazy dream. Gwen realized. Great.

"Hey, it's only crazy if you make it crazy." Peter responded despite Gwen having spoken in her head. "You're not going to see anything here unless it can come about based on your actions-"

"Can we cut all the mystery mumbo-jumbo??" Gwen pleaded, her hands lifting in frustration. She pulled her mask off, her cowl staying up as she looked Peter in the eye. "What's going on here?"

"I think I'm going to let Oscorp explain it," Peter advised, turning away and walking towards the roof's ledge. "You'll probably believe them more than you would the crazy dream, right?"

Gwen huffed in frustration and rolled her eyes. "Gee, that cleared up so much. How do you do it?"

"Spider-sense is a crazy thing..." Peter replied, stepping onto the ledge and looking back. "...You'd be surprised by how far it goes."

The recklessness of his actions made Gwen's stomach drop, and she took a step forward. "Hey... Pete, wait-"

"Oh don't worry, I'm not doing anything." Peter promised, offering Gwen a smile. "The decision-making is going to be all you, pal."

The air suddenly began to grow hotter... smoke rose from behind Peter, and Gwen's eyes popped as she saw flames begin to engulf the cityscape as far as the eye could see. It was such an insane thing to see... it beckoned her forwards, prompting Gwen to stand next to Peter.

"What am I looking at, Pete...?" She murmured. As soon as she finished talking, she felt the building beginning to give way. Gwen screamed as the ledge she was stepping on began to crumble, grabbing at an undisturbed section of the roof and holding on as she felt her legs dangling in the air. She stretched out one arm to fire a web so that she could pull herself up, but nothing happened: her web-shooter was broken or had run out of webbing.

"Don't let it scare you, Gwen..." Peter's voice reached her ears, and she looked up to see her dead friend suddenly standing on the roof section where she was desperately clinging to. "...You're going home soon."
