"It's times like these, you learn to love again"
-Times Like These, the Foo Fighters
The next time that Gwen opened her eyes, she found herself high above the flames coating the streets. Her irises stared down as the fires grew more distant. It was almost like she was floating away from them.
Is... Gwen thought to herself. ...Is it over?
She continued looking down as she was slowly lifted away from the fires. All of a sudden, this upward movement stopped, and Gwen blinked in a daze.
Huh??
Again, she felt herself moving upwards, then the movement ceased. Then it began again...
What the-
Gwen was still aching and exhausted, but she managed to tilt her head to see what was happening. She was dangling upside down and had a line of webbing caught on her ankle.
And on the other end of the web was Miles Morales.
She watched as he heaved upwards, pulling Gwen towards him with the webbing. Miles stopped, then reached his other arm down and continued to rope her in.
It took a few seconds for Gwen's brain to process everything... and when she finally understood what had happened, she began to cry.
I'm alive...
...Miles caught me...
...He saved my life.
Her hand flew to her mouth as tears of myriad emotions-shock, relief, joy, thankfulness-rolled down her cheeks. No emotion was held back as Gwen openly sobbed, her body trembling from the realization that she had survived the fall.
And as Miles got her to the edge of the observation deck, a smile flashed across her face. Miles heaved again, and Gwen was able to lean up and grab his arm so that she could be pulled into his arms.
Miles fell backwards with Gwen on top of him, the two desperately clinging to each other and gasping for breath as they forgot about everything else in the world. Gwen's face was buried firmly in the crook of Miles's neck and her hands were gripping the back of his jacket as her sobbing quieted down.
Even during a moment like this, Miles couldn't resist the urge to make a joke: "I've been telling you to give me some web-shooters!" He told her, making Gwen break out into a fit of giggles as she savored every second with him that she was given. After several moments of silence, Gwen heard Miles sigh and ask, "What were you thinking??"
Gwen knew exactly what she'd been thinking-she had to get Venom away from Miles, no matter what. And in light of what Dr. Connors had told her about Gwen Stacys throughout the multiverse falling to their deaths, it just seemed like another step in a process that was out of her control anyways.
Speaking of Connors's words... what had happened? Oscorp's research had indicated she was about to die, her spider-sense had been warning her of it for days... why was she still alive?
After giving it several moments of thought, Gwen dismissed the questions altogether. None of my business, she decided. But what IS my business is giving Miles an answer...
"I mean..." Gwen began. "...We've all got to die sometime. What's more important is what you do with the time you've got, and..." She trailed off, looking at the ground before staring into the lenses of Miles's mask again. "...There was nothing better that I could've done with my time aside from making sure you made it out alive."
