As I assisted Mel in getting ready for her date with Damon, I tried to push the mysterious situation to the back of my mind.

"No, I actually think something more might be going on," Mel stressed, recounting a troubling incident.

"Just because he glared at the guy and then later the guy showed up all beaten up," she continued.

We all winced at the thought.

"All for being partners with you?" I asked, my concern growing.

"Yeah, totally overboard," Mel replied, her uncertainty evident. "I don't even know if I want to go on this date night anymore."

"Yeah, I think it might be best if you just stay in for the night. Take some time alone to think things over and then talk to him about it," Jess suggested, offering reassurance.

"Maybe," Mel conceded.

"Do you want us to give you some space?" Lora asked, her voice gentle.

"Yeah, thanks for coming over and helping out," Mel replied gratefully.

After leaving Mel's dorm, Lora and I began walking back to ours, but then my phone chimed with a notification.

"Sorry, I have to take this," I said, already feeling a sense of unease.

"It's fine, I'll just walk to the cafe. I've got a test in the morning," Lora said.

"Yeah, me too," Jess added, before we parted ways.

Entering my dorm room, I answered the call with a sense of trepidation. "Hello?"

"Hey there, it's Christian. What's up with Mel?" his voice came through the phone.

"Are you calling on behalf of Damon?" I inquired, my curiosity piqued.

"Maybe?" he replied vaguely.

"Well, tell Damon she needs space and she's a bit freaked out," I relayed, taking a seat at my desk.

"I'll be sure to pass the message along," he acknowledged.

Glancing up at the calendar, I noted that there were only two and a half more months until winter.

"The closer it gets to winter break, the weirder I feel," I muttered aloud, voicing my thoughts.

"Why? Don't wanna visit family?" Christian questioned.

"Yeah, now I'm just gonna rent out an apartment and ride out the storm," I replied, my tone tinged with resignation.

"There's a storm coming in?" he inquired, sounding puzzled.

"Yeah, they said it's gonna be worse than usual," I explained.
