The morning began like any other, with Christian dropping me off at school. The car ride was filled with our usual banter, his hand occasionally brushing mine in a comforting, familiar way. I gave him a quick kiss before stepping out of the car, his smile lingering in my mind as I walked towards the school entrance.
Inside, the halls buzzed with the energy of students, everyone bustling to get to their classes. I spotted Jess and Lora near their lockers, deep in conversation. They looked up as I approached, their expressions lighting up.
"Ooh, together?" I teased, raising an eyebrow at the sight of them side by side.
Jess and Lora were always up to something, and their friendship was a constant source of entertainment.
"Yup," Lora said, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "We're planning our next big adventure."
I laughed, enjoying their infectious enthusiasm. But then Jess's expression turned serious, a hint of concern in her eyes.
"By the way, where were you?" she asked.
"Uh, at Chris's house," I replied, a slight hesitation in my voice. "Why?"
"Well, a student went missing," Jess said, her voice lowering as if sharing a secret. "It's all anyone's talking about this morning."
"Who?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.
"That kid who was in your class," Jess said. "I think his name was Jake."
Crap.
My mind raced, trying to place the name.
Jake...
Jake...
The realization hit me like a cold wave.
What did Jake do?
Was it possible that his disappearance was somehow connected to last night?
I shook the thought away, trying to focus on the conversation at hand.
"Really? That's... strange," I managed to say, trying to keep my voice steady. "I hope they find him soon."
Jess nodded, her brow furrowing. "Yeah, it's pretty scary. The police were here earlier, asking questions."
Before I could respond, the intercom crackled to life, and the principal's voice echoed through the hall.
"Y/N, please report to the principal's office immediately."
A chill ran down my spine as my name echoed in the air. Jess and Lora exchanged puzzled glances, their concern mirroring my own.
"What do you think that's about?" Lora asked.
"I... I don't know," I stammered, a knot of dread forming in my stomach. "I guess I'll find out."
I made my way to the principal's office, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts. As I walked, snippets of conversations and laughter around me seemed to fade into a distant hum. I tried to keep my breathing steady, but the fear gnawed at me, each step feeling heavier than the last.
When I reached the office, I was met by Mrs. Patterson, the principal's assistant. Her usual cheerful demeanor was replaced by a stern, almost grave expression.
"Go right in, Y/N," she said, her voice softer than usual.
I opened the door to the principal's office and stepped inside. Principal Thompson sat behind his large oak desk, his face somber. Beside him stood an officer, his uniform crisp and imposing, a notepad in hand.
"Please, have a seat," Principal Thompson said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. I sat down, my heart pounding in my chest.
"Y/N, thank you for coming," he began, his voice gentle but firm. "This is Officer Daniels. He has a few questions for you regarding the disappearance of a student."
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady. "Of course. I'll help in any way I can."
Officer Daniels nodded, his gaze steady and unreadable.
"We understand that you might have known Jake Roberts. He's been reported missing, and we're speaking with anyone who might have had contact with him recently."
Jake Roberts.
The name felt heavy, laden with implications that I wasn't ready to face. I took a deep breath, trying to gather my thoughts. "Yes, I knew him. We had a few classes together."
The officer's eyes narrowed slightly, as if weighing my words. "When was the last time you saw him?"
I racked my brain, trying to recall the last encounter I had with Jake. He had seemed tense, agitated.
He mentioned something about knowing the truth, about needing to talk to me.
"It was a few days ago," I said slowly. "During math."
Officer Daniels scribbled something in his notepad. "Did he say anything to you? Anything that might indicate where he was going or what he was planning?"
I hesitated, the memory of our last conversation flashing through my mind. He had talked about Christian, about how he was dangerous, how I needed to see the truth.
But could I share that?
Would it implicate Christian in ways I didn't want to consider?
"He mentioned something about needing to figure things out," I said finally, choosing my words carefully. "He didn't give any specifics, though."
The officer nodded, his pen moving swiftly across the page. "And you've had no contact with him since then?"
"No, none," I replied, my voice firmer now. "I've been at Christian's house most of the time."
Principal Thompson leaned forward, his expression concerned. "Y/N, if there's anything else you remember, anything at all, it's important that you tell us. Alex's family is very worried."
I nodded, the weight of the situation pressing down on me. "I understand. I'll let you know if I remember anything else."
Officer Daniels closed his notepad and gave me a measured look. "Thank you for your cooperation, Y/N. We'll be in touch if we need any more information."
I stood up, my legs feeling unsteady beneath me. As I left the office, the door closing softly behind me, a wave of uncertainty washed over me.
What had Jake done?
And how much did he know?
I walked back through the halls, my mind spinning with questions and doubts. Christian had always been my rock, my protector. But now, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something deeper, something darker, lurking beneath the surface.
Something that I needed to understand before it was too late.
