I couldn't help but feel like the universe was playing a cruel joke on me when I found out that I was assigned to be partners with him in math class the next day. Maybe I could talk to the teacher about it.
After all, my grades were good now, and I was no longer at risk of failing. Surely, I could request another partner.
"So, what do you want to do first?" he asked as we sat down together.
"Nothing. I hate group projects," I confessed, hoping he might sympathize.
"Well, me too. How about you do part A with your tutor boyfriend, and I do part B by myself, and then we put it together at the end?" he suggested, surprising me with his reasonable proposal.
"Yeah, that sounds good. That way, it'll be just like working alone," I agreed, relieved to find a solution that suited both of us.
"Great. We can meet up right there and just compare and call it a day," he suggested, and I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of optimism amidst the apprehension of working with him.
The less i talk to him, the better
Afterward, I met up with Mel. She seemed tense, as if she had something important to discuss with me, something she wanted to keep between us and no one else. It felt strange, like the calm before a storm.
She quickly pulled me inside, her eyes wide with panic. "Please tell me I'm not going insane," she pleaded urgently.
"What's wrong?" I asked, concern lacing my voice.
"I don't know, man. It's like Damon has gone insane," she rambled, her words tumbling out in a rush.
"Okay, so what happened?" I prompted, trying to make sense of her distress.
"Well, first, after the party, remember how I went to talk to him?" she began, her voice shaky with emotion.
"Yeah?" I responded, recalling the events of the previous night.
"We talked, and things were going well until he said something weird," she continued, her brow furrowing in confusion.
"What did he say?" I pressed, feeling a knot form in the pit of my stomach.
"He said I'm lucky I wasn't like Christian, and instead of faking my personality, I get to see how he really is," she revealed, her words sending a chill down my spine.
"What?" I exclaimed, stunned by the implications of Damon's words.
"Yeah, and now I want to know what's going on with you and Christian. I mean it," she demanded, her gaze unwavering.
I paused for a moment, glancing at my phone, the memory of our last conversation weighing heavily on my mind. Taking a deep breath, I made a decision.
"We can't talk here," I declared, my voice low with urgency. Retrieving my phone from my pocket, I instructed her to do the same.
"Got any jewelry he's given you?" I asked, a plan forming in my mind.
"Yeah, this necklace," she replied, pointing to the delicate chain around her neck.
"Leave it," I instructed firmly, leading her out of the building and into the anonymity of a random hotel lobby.
