A raven arrived at Winterfell this morning to announce Jon Arryn's death. Before becoming the King's Hand, he was a loyal friend to my father, almost like a father to him. His reputation preceded him. He was a good man; that is what we must remember.

However, I have studied my history lessons carefully and have concluded that it is not uncommon for men of his calibre to be the target of plots. I am convinced that Jon Arryn did not die of natural causes. He was old, certainly, but no Hand of the King has died of old age since Septon Barth, in the reign of Jaehaerys the First. I simply believe he was murdered.

My little investigation is set to gain new momentum thanks to the King's arrival at Winterfell. My father has always described him as a man of honour, alongside whom he fought with pride during the Rebellion. Jory, on the other hand, has told me of an alcoholic who spends his time surrounded by whores.

I am also looking forward to meeting the Lannisters. Cersei, the queen, is described as the most beautiful woman in all of Westeros. Her brother, Jaime, is said to be the most handsome man, but also the finest swordsman. Their younger brother, Tyrion, is apparently a misshapen and evil beast. Though I prefer to believe those who say he is a scholar with a sharp tongue.

This morning, my brothers made an interesting discovery. A deserter from the Night's Watch was arrested by our men. Following the low, my father had him executed. He insisted that my brothers assist him, and on the way back, they found seven wolf cubs that we were allowed to keep. Three females and four males, just like us. Mine, with her brown coat, is called 'Arrow'. She won't be easy to train, but we get on well.

As I sit on my bed, Arrow stares at me with big eyes. I'm trying to teach her to sit, but she'd rather bark than obey. My bedroom door suddenly opens, revealing Theon. Theon has been living with us for ten years now; his father, Balon Greyjoy, 'gave' him to my father as a token of his good faith. For the past two years, we've had a rather strange relationship that I find hard to define. I wouldn't say I'm in love with him, but I'm quite happy with our little escapades.

"Diana, your parents are waiting for you," he says with a smile.
