The sun's rays streaming through the windows blind me, forcing me to turn around to face Jaime. His eyes are wide open and fixed upon me, as if I were the most beautiful thing in the world, as if I had always been there. I think we are both astonished that neither of us fled during the night.
"Good morning," he says in a slightly raspy voice.
I feel as though it is a mirage, a dream that will evaporate the instant I try to touch him. In case of doubt, I keep my hands to myself.
"Good morning," I reply, unable to keep myself from blushing.
The night we just spent should have loosened me up, but the realization that I find myself naked in a bed with Jaime Lannister prevents me from acting normally. This must seem strange to you, but what would you do if you found yourself in such a situation with the man reputed to be the most attractive in the Seven Kingdoms?
In an attempt to help me relax, Jaime leans toward me to kiss me. But suddenly, three knocks resound upon the door.
"Reality catches up with us..."
"I hate reality," Jaime complains, wrapping his arm around my waist to keep me from getting up.
"So I've gathered. If the country goes up in ashes and I don't know it, it will be your fault."
Without any joy, he withdraws his arm and lets me rise. While heading toward the door, I slip on a dressing gown.
"Are we coming at a bad time?" Sansa asks.
"You look busy," Arya adds, stepping forward to try to identify the man whose legs are all she can see. "With whom?"
Somewhat exasperated, I push them out of the room and close the door behind me. I have no doubt that, whatever the nature of my relationship with Jaime, it will eventually become known. I prefer, nonetheless, to delay that moment. I try to put things into perspective by telling myself that sleeping with a Lannister will always be less serious than the incestuous relationship Jon and Daenerys had.
"We all saw you with the Kingslayer last night."
"His name is Jaime," I correct Arya.
"Ah! So it is him."
My sister may be more composed and thoughtful than before, but she still tends to stick her nose where it shouldn't be. And, above all, she hasn't learned to show tact over the years.
"May I know what you want with me?" I press them.
"Everyone is waiting for you in the Council room. We need to talk about Cersei."
I let escape a sigh; I would have liked to have just one single little day off. But rest will wait. Perhaps until my death—we shall see what Cersei has to offer us.
"Fine. I'm coming."
In order not to let them glimpse Jaime, I make myself as thin as possible to slip through the opening of the door. Once it is closed, I let myself fall back into the bed.
"Talking about Cersei... I feel like I've heard that my entire life."
"Me too!" Jaime replies. "At the risk of disappointing you, you never get used to it."
I lift my head, and that is when it hits me. I am in immense shit. Cersei has never liked me, that is a fact. My claim to the throne upon which she has sat her usurper's arse surely won't improve our relations. But if she learns, in any way, that I've slept with Jaime, I can say goodbye to my precious little head.
