The four entered the school kitchen and found Trey waiting for them. "Welcome back." He said. "Looks like you got plenty!" The two boys set the baskets on the table.
"Now you can make us some massive tarts!" Grim said.
"Well, the bigger the tarts, the harder it'll be to peel all these nuts, so... good luck with that!"
"We have to peel all these?" Deuce asked. "Suddenly the whole room is spinning." You shook your head at his dramatics.
"Preparation is the key to good baking."
"Yeah, yeah I know." Ace said. "We've come this far. We're not giving up now!"
"If you don't help then you won't get any of it." You said. You and Ace were peeling them by hand while Deuce and Grim used magic. Once that was done, it was time to strain them. You face palmed when the other three looked like they're about to pass out from the next step. "You three are hopeless in the kitchen." Trey chuckled, secretly agreeing with you on that.
After puréing all the chestnuts, Ace sighed in relief. "There!" He slammed the last nut on the table. "Finally got em all puréed!"
"My arm is killing me." Deuce said.
"Welcome to cooking." You said.
"Nice work." Trey said. "It'll be all the sweeter for your pain!"
"The smell alone already has me droolin'..." Grim said. You noticed the little bit of drool slipping out of his mouth.
"I just need to add butter and sugar to the chestnut paste, and a sensible splash of oyster sauce— that's my secret ingredient."
"Oyster sauce?!" The other three humans said. The boys were completely surprised to hear that, but you were suspicious to hear that. Oyster sauce is one thing that should not be in tarts.
"Yup. The umami of the oysters gives the cream a deep, savory flavor. I use this one here." The green haired boy pulled out the bottle of sauce from a cabinet and placed it on the table. "Walrus-Brand Young Oyster Sauce. All the best bakers in the world us it in their tarts."
You stared at him as if he just sprouted a second head. "Please be joking." You mumbled.
"Really?" Deuce asked. "But isn't oyster sauce like, super salty?"
"Some people put chocolate into curry, don't they?" Ace stated. "Maybe it's the same idea."
Trey couldn't keep the serious face on anymore and started laughing. "I'm totally lying!" He said. "No on in their right mind would put oyster sauce into a pastry."
"Oh thank god." You said, completely relieved that he was messing around. If Sato had heard that, he would've had a heart attack or went along with the joke.
"What?!" Ace said. "So you were just yanking our chain?"
Trey giggled some more. "I mean, if you'd use your brain, you'd realized how ridiculous it was! Let that be a lesson to you; don't believe everything you hear."
Grim scoffed. "And here I thought that human was actually somewhat decent." He said.
"Next, I'll put in the cream... oh!" Trey said. His eyes widened a bit when he saw it.
"What's wrong?" Ace asked.
"You guys gathered so many chestnuts that we may have overdone it with the chestnut paste. I don't think we have enough cream to mix in."
"Then I'll go buy some." Deuce said. "Do they sell it at the school store?"
'There's a store on campus?' You thought. 'Sounds interesting.'
