"Hiii Reese... What are you doing here?" I was so shocked I wasn't sure what else to say.
"Hi Georgia. Can you do anything?" He asked hopefully. I spun around to look at the ancient clock hanging at the other end of the living room. 7:08 pm.
"Yeah, why not." He'd crossed my mind a few times over the past week or so. I'd thought that us talking was just going to be a one time thing, but I was glad it wasn't. He was really funny and cool to be around. "Kaiya! I'm going out!" I called back into the family room.
"Okay!"
I closed the front door behind me.
"So... What are we doing?"
"Just..." I gave him a wide eyed, "I don't really know look", as we started walking. "Seeing where the wind takes us." I kinda cringed at myself.
"Yeah." He chuckled. He didn't mind how cringey or unfunny I was.
We somehow ended up near the highway. There was a little diner further up the road, and I realised how hungry I was.
"I've not eaten anything in 4 hours."
"Did your parents not make dinner?" Reese raised his eyebrows.
"No, they're busy." I didn't really feel like ruining the fun by telling him my dad was gone.
"Well, have you got any money?" We both searched our pockets. These were the same joggies I'd put the money from the mall into. Convenient. Kinda gross though. I pulled out a crumpled 10 dollar note. Reese found a few 1 dollar bills in his too.
"Taking people's lunch money pays off." He smirked.
"You stole people's lunch money?" I said, laughing in disbelief.
"I mean... maybe..." He smirked.
"Reese! You can't do that!" I still laughed, nudging him with my elbow. "I remember my first day of elementary school some big kid stole my lunch money and I cried for ages!"
"Yeah, but we aren't in elementary school anymore, are we?" He defended. I gave him a "Yes, but still" glare. We were now in the deserted parking lot of the diner, spare for one 1995 Mercedes-Benz. I walked up the narrow steps and pushed the door open.
There weren't any people apart from the waitress. It was one of those diners that every American shithole had. It was lovely. It had those classic red sofas on either side of white tables next to the windows.
"What are we getting?" Reese peered at me.
"Anything that'll mean I'm not starving." I looked at the menu on the wall.
We ended up ordering just a lot of fries and milkshakes. We sat down at the table furthest away from the bar, one of us on each side. I always got really embarrassed when I ate with other people, but with Reese, I was fine. I felt like I could be myself around him. I'd not felt so happy in a long time.
