Oh fuck. I had my maths exam, and I don't think I passed it. There were tons of questions I didn't even know how to do even after relentlessly studying day and night. But that wasn't even the most important thing right now.
Mom found pot in Caleb's room just a few minutes ago. I don't know how the fuck, or how he's got that in his room in the first place. I swear to got this family is fucking falling apart.
"Where the FUCK DID YOU GET THIS?" I could hear moms hysterical screams from the kitchen.
I guess there had to be a moment where she realised she fucked up as a parent. All these things she'd never noticed because she was so absent in all our lives, were now surfacing. The kids she thought she'd raised better than most still weren't perfect, and were going through a lot of shit whether she believed it or not. Everyone did at this age.
The worst thing though was that it wasn't even her fault that she was never there for us, but dad's. I have to imagine its fucking hard raising five kids and spending endless hours at work just to make sure they have what to eat, and then they are nothing but ungrateful little shits in return.
"Don't you fucking DARE WALK AWAY FROM ME! ANSWER MY FUCKING QUESTION." Caleb stormed down the hall and out the door as mom bellowed after him. Once she realised he simply wasn't listening to her she whipped around to me. "You, young lady. DO YOU WANT TO FUCKING TELL ME ANYTHING?" I froze. What was it this time?
"No?"
"GUESS WHO FUCKING CALLED ME TODAY? THE FUCKING SCHOOL TELLING ME YOU DID REALLY FUCKING BAD ON YOUR TEST. THIS IS WHAT HANGING OUT WITH YOUR FUCKING STUPID FRIENDS GETS YOU. YOU WANNA BE LIKE THEM? FINE! JUST DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE COME TO ME WHEN YOU CAN'T GET A JOB ANYWHERE BUT FUCKING WALLMART. NOW GO TO YOUR FUCKING ROOM, I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR FACE."
Jesus fucking Christ. My heart was pounding, so I got the fuck out of there as fast as could, because I didn't want to get cornered with her towering over me and screaming at the top of her lungs like last time, shoving me right back in that corner if I even tried to move. I shoved my shoes on and slammed the door, and went to the garage. I searched for the keys in the plant pot next to the side door, where they now permanently resided, but I couldn't find them. I tried the door in frustration, and sure enough, it was unlocked.
I stepped in, to see Caleb laying on the old couch, watching me fearfully. Then when he realised it was just me he picked the cigarette he'd put down on the ashtray which, if I'd been mom I'd have noticed pretty quickly because it literally had smoke coming out of it. He sat up to make space for me, where I wandered over and slumped down.
"So what's this shit I'm hearing?" I asked him, slightly amused.
"What?" He exhaled with smoke. I gave him a "come on now..." look. He took another drag from his cigarette. "I bought it." He shrugged and passed me the cigarette. Smoking's meant to be bad for you, but I literally didn't care anymore. I'd always secretly wanted to try it anyway. It tasted exactly what it smelt like. Smokey.
"Why?" I tried not to cough as I breathed the smoke out, scrunching my face up and looking up at him.
"I don't fucking know. I guess I've just been feeling like shit. And I thought it would help."
"Did it?"
"I dunno." We were quiet for a minute.
"Why'd you come here?" I asked as I stubbed the cigarette out in the ashtray on the table with the lamp and record player.
"It's quiet. Why'd you?"
"I like it in here. Brings back memories." Silence again. "Do you still love him?" He let out the biggest sigh ever.
"I don't know if I love him, but I fucking miss him." I couldn't have put it better to be honest. "I want our family back. I want him back. But with what he's fucking done to us, to mom, I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive him."
The two of us just chilled for a while, talking about things. We'd never really done that before. We put some of dad's old records on, and it was really a vibe. Unforgettable.
The next morning mom seemed overjoyed comparing to the usual. It wasn't long before someone pointed it out.
"Mom, what are you so happy about?" Richard asked.
"So, I thought everything over at night, and I've decided." Mom announced proudly. "We're moving."
