Reese hadn't been at school today, so I had no choice but to sit with Julia and Kaitlin. They were way nicer than Emma and Zoe, but they just weren't the same. Back when everything had been okay, lunch was the most exciting thing to happen all day. With Julia and Kaitlin, it was about just as interesting as 7th period Maths. The whole time I was zoned out, thinking about why Reese wasn't at school, since he hadn't called me or anything. But I'll take boring friends over no friends any day, thank you very much.
After school, I was off straight to his house.
I squeezed through the gap in the fence and to his bedroom window, which was, as always, open.
I pulled it further open and climbed in, but the room was empty.
After a quick wander around the house I only found Malcolm and Dewey, big surprise, watching TV.
"Where's Reese? He wasn't at school today." I inquired, standing behind them.
"Dunno." Malcolm looked around at me lazily, and returned his view to the TV.
"Real helpful." I muttered and walked back to the little room. I sat down on Reese's bed, wondering where he could be. After a few seconds, I realised I could hear muffled sobbing from the bathroom.
Was that Reese?
No. Reese didn't cry. Could it be Lois or Hal? No, they're at work, right?
Well, maybe Reese is just minding his business in the toilet and it wouldn't be too cool for me to walk in. But then again, their bathroom has three doors, and I've never understood how that works.
I tiptoed up to the bathroom door and put my ear to it. It was definitely Reese, crying. I didn't know what to do. He might get embarrassed if I went in, but then I want to make sure he's okay. I stood at the door, debating whether to go in or not.
"Reese, you okay?" I ended up asking through the door. It sounded like he had exploded into fresh tears. I decided to just go in, and there he was, sitting on the lid of the pink toilet in the pink bathroom, looking as vulnerable as ever.
I didn't know what to say. The wave of shock hit me like a car. He always seemed to be such a tough guy. I always knew that façade wasn't real, but...
"What's wrong?" I asked gently, as I closed the door and walked over to him. I crouched down at his knees, carefully placing a hand on one of them.
"Why do you care about me?!" He yelled, frustrated, throwing his hands onto his cheeks.
"What do you mean?" I frowned. How could he possibly be asking me that?
"Why do you hang out with me instead of literally anyone else?!"
"Because, Reese. You're really sweet, and-"
"What's so special about that? You can find that anywhere!" That was just plain wrong. On the surface, he just seemed like your average idiot loser. But once I got to know him, he was so much more than that.
He watched me, his red eyes growing more worried.
"No Reese, you can't. In my fourteen years of being alive I've never found anyone even remotely like you." I smiled and pulled him some toilet roll so he could dry his eyes. He gave me a thankful smile, wiped his eyes and slid off the toilet seat onto the cold bathroom tiles. I sat down too, since I had been crouching this whole time, and my legs hurt really bad.
