Liv.
Present day.
A call buzzes in my pocket. It replaces the bleak air.
I ask Sam to give me a second. To wait.
We are at the coast now.
To get closure we don't know how to get.
I get out of the car. Sit on the rock that we played on as kids. Press the dial button. Wait.
"This is Liv. Who is this?" I ask trying to sound as if I wasn't still raw from my emotions.
"Hi, Liv!" A cheery voice projects back. "I'm calling for the intern position you applied for. Is this a bad time?
I sit straight. "No. Please, go on."
It is a bad time. But I don't tell her that.

I get back in the car after five minutes.
I got the position. I think I'm happy about it. I'm still bleary from everything.
"Who was it?" Sam asks. I stay silent.
"I got the intern position at the law corp." I try to smile. I hope he remembers.
His eyes go blank for a moment and a stack of bricks drop into my stomach. Then they brighten with recognition. "Liv, that's great! When do you start?"
"Next Monday."
He frowns. "Why aren't you happy about this?" He turns the ignition and the sounds interrupt us.
I sigh. "I'm still trying to figure everything out."
He clears his throat. He looks at me. "... Friends?"
I laugh but it doesn't reach my eyes. "Who? Me and the lady who called?"
"No, dummy, me and you." He takes a breath. "Are we still friends?"
I don't know.
