Chapter 5 * Giovanna

The moment Kai said Zain's name and referred to him as Wall Street King I knew my cover was about to be blown off if I didn't act fast, I froze for a second but recovered fast enough to text Rach to let her know she was about to walk into my assignment and to make sure she didn't say anything ending up on her blowing up my cover, since we don't know who's after Kai, we can't exclude is friends just yet.

I have to give it to my best friend she could have been an actress, as soon as they stepped in, the shock on her face was Oscar-award-worthy.

We've finished dinner and are currently enjoying dessert, when Zain asks "So Gi, when were you gonna tell me you were dating my best friend".

"Well Zain, as I said earlier I didn't know you two knew each other let alone that you were best friends," I tell him.

"The million-dollar question is what did you see in him?" Nate asks me, I can feel some hostility coming from him but I just smile up at Kai "Aren't you guys best friends? 'Cause since this dinner started you guys have been putting your friend down, pretty much insinuating he's not good enough for me" I asked them.

"Pre-season is about to start how are feeling JJ?" Kai asks JJ, changing the subject, "Let's not talk about football, I'm pretty sure the ladies won't appreciate it" JJ replies looking at his girlfriend, I have a feeling she hates football talk from the way she rolls her eyes.

"Yes please let's not" Anastasia replies, "Am I right ladies?" She asks looking at me and then Rachel.

Zain snorts a laugh "You're barking at the wrong tree Anastasia, these two, are worse than men when it comes to football".

She looks at us shocked "Don't tell me you would prefer to watch a football game than to go shopping or do literally anything else" she asks us.

"Well, I love both to be honest while my best friend here" Rachel points at me "will avoid a retail store like the plague".

I shrug and Zain takes the opportunity to prove his point "Gi how many players are on a football team?", I sip on my wine glass, "eleven players on the field however the number of people on a team varies based on offense and defense and a team's ability to have enough personal to cover those roles to ensure anyone on their line up has replacements for any type of situation".

I notice Nate observing me, he's the only one who doesn't have a significant other here tonight, well technically neither do I or Kai but no one knows that except for Rachel.

"Is there something you want to ask me, Nate?" I ask him, looking him right in the eyes, he averts my gaze.

"No, I'm just in awe of you, I've read your file" he doesn't elaborate but from the look on his face I can see he doesn't believe a woman like me could accomplish what's written there.

When I'm about to ask him what version, my phone starts ringing, I excuse myself from the table, "Hello?" I say.

"Hello, is this Giovanna Hathaway?" a female voice asks me. "This is she, to whom am I speaking?" I ask.

"Ms. Hathaway this is Greta Ricci, I'm calling from New York Memorial Hospital, we have Mr. Lucas de Sousa here and you're listed as one of his emergency contacts," I gasp, "Lucas? Is he ok?"

"Mr. De Sousa was in a car accident, could you come to the hospital?" Greta asks me, "I'm on my way," I tell her.

I go back to the living room, "Rach can I talk to you for a second?" I ask her.

She studies my face for a while when she finally speaks up, "Yes of course," She gets up and we go to Kai's study. "What's wrong?" She asks me, "The last time I saw that look on your face, someone died".

"I just got a call from a hospital, Lucas was in an accident and they need me there, I'm listed as one of his emergency contacts," I tell her.

She gasps "What are we still doing here? Let's go before he disappears again".

We walk hand in hand back into the living room, "We need to go out for a bit, I'm sorry" Rachel says.

Kai looks at me with a puzzled look and I mouth later and he nods. Rachel goes kiss Zain and I walk towards Kai and whisper in his ear "I texted Mason, he's guarding the perimeter". He searches my eyes "Can I help with anything?" I shake my head "I'll explain when I'm back" he nods and kisses me on the cheek.
