Chapter 30 * Kai

We've been in the hospital for two days now, no changes, no improvements, we can only see her through a glass window, I can't touch her, or smell her. Life has lost all color and purpose for me.

I go down to the waiting area after seeing her, walking in I find Giovanna's mother, Camille, yelling on the phone, she got here a few hours after Giovanna got to the hospital and she hasn't left, like me, she won't leave until Giovanna wakes up.

She notices me "You better come see your daughter or I swear to God there will be hell to pay Jared" She ends the call, and walks towards me "Can I go see her?" She asks, I nod.

She starts to walk towards the door but turns around "Thank you Kai" I look at her "for not leaving her when she needs you" Tears cloud my vision but I manage to nod.

"Oh, while you were up there a gentleman called Richard came by and asked me to ask you to call him", she turns and leaves.

Richard was here yesterday to see how we were holding up and to visit Giovanna, he tried to talk about the election but I'm not in the right state of mind to think about anything but Giovanna.

I pull my phone from my pocket and dial his number, he picks up after the third ring "Hey man, how are you holding up?" he asks, "how am I? As my world ended. I can't see color, I can't taste food, the world as I knew lost all meaning".

"I know it's hard Kai, and I hate to be this guy, but you need to come to the office, there's work to to be done. You're the New Mayor" he's he fucking kidding me? He wants me to go work with Giovanna laying on a bed, in a coma? "You've got to be kidding me Richard" I bark, "I get it man but you have a duty to the people of New York as well" he sighs.

"I forfeit, there the city can find another Mayor," I say clenching my jaw and ending the call. Fuck the city, fuck being Mayor, everything is meanless without her.

1 Month Later

It has been thirty days since she got shot and she's still not awake, during this period she has been rushed to surgery six times, her heart stopped two times for a few minutes, each time, and the doctors keep telling us she may not wake up and if she does she may have permeant brain damage due to her heart stopping and no oxygen reaching her brain.

I've officially stepped down as Mayor, and my parents called me, to call me crazy for abandoning my dream, once upon a time that was my dream but then she showed up in my life.

We can sit with her now for one hour each day, Giovanna's father came to see her once since she's been in the hospital.

I understand families are complicated, look at mine, but I also know if something happened to me my parents would be here and would bring an army of the best doctors in the world.

Camilla and John did that the moment Giovanna's first surgery was over, her mom went as far as to fire and call the entire medical team incompetent. Can't blame her, they never gave us clear answers, if she didn't rip them down I would.

It's my turn to sit with her, I take her hand in mine, "Baby please wake up, I can't live without you", I pull out my phone and start playing If It Isn't Love by New Edition, it's one of her favorite songs, whenever she got ready, she would dance and belt it out like she was the seventh member.

I play her favorite songs every day in hopes she'll hear them and feels like opening her eyes to dance to them.

The song ends and On Bended Knee by Boyz II Men starts playing, I start singing to her, so many nights I dream of you,..., when I open up my eyes to face reality, every moment without you, it seems like eternity, I'm begging you, begging you came back to me...

"Come on baby, wake up come back to me" I whisper in her hear.
