Chapter 31 * Giovanna

I hear Kai's voice "Baby please wake up, I can't live without you", I try to open my eyes but nothing, I try to move but nothing.

I'm surrounded by darkness, I push myself as hard as I can to open my eyes but nothing, the last thing I remember is pushing Kai out of the way when I saw the gun, where am I? What happened? On Bended Knees starts playing and I hear Kai singing some parts to me so many nights I dream of you,..., when I open up my eyes to face reality, every moment without you, seems like an eternity, I'm begging you, begging you came back to me...

I want to, I want to tell him I'm here, I feel his touch, "Come on baby, wake up, come back to me" he whispers in my ear.

I push as hard as I can and I'm able to move a finger, or so I think I moved it, pushing a bit harder a manage to open my eyelids halfway, everything is blurry, I try blinking a couple of times, facing the direction where music is coming from I see him.

I try to speak but there's something in my mouth, I start to panic, coughing, I feel my throat on fire, and at the same time is like someone shoved sand down my throat as well.

With the fuss I'm making Kai's eyes snap from his phone to me, he jumps out of his chair, "Baby, you're awake" I try to reach the tubes that are in my mouth, but he sees the panic in my eyes and rushes out the door, to call for help.

A team of nurses and doctors come in, "Welcome back Ms.Hathaway, Nurse Kelly here is going to take the respiratory tubes out of your mouth so try to stay still, blink once if you understand me" I blink and a nurse starts removing the tubes.

I feel exhausted my eyes start closing, "don't close your eyes baby" I hear Kai, I try to keep them open but it's a battle that I'll most likely lose.

"Don't you dare leave me again Giovanna Marie Hathaway" he says in a stern tone, I want to keep them open but I can't.

"Mr. Hastings, don't worry, she's just tired. She seemed to respond well to what we were saying so give her time." The doctor tells Kai, "It's good news, she can breathe by herself and it doesn't seem to be any brain damage. but we will run some tests just to be sure". 

I open my eyes again, and it's dark outside, I look around the room and there's no one there, I try calling out for someone but can't, at that moment the door opens, and the nurse from earlier walks to my bedside.

"Hello hun, I'm Nurse Kelly. Do you remember me, from earlier today?" she asks, I nod "Wh—", I try to clear my throat "Whe—" but I can't formulate proper sentences.

"Where is the gentleman from earlier?" she asks me, I nod "You are in the ICU hun, your family can only see you for one hour a day".

After the nurse finishes her check she walks out of the room and a little later, she comes back with a doctor.

"Ms. Hathaway, welcome back," he says grabbing a chart "You gave us quite a scare," he says, "I'm going to ask you a few questions try and speak but if you can blink once for no and twice for yes. Ok?" I nod, "great".

"Do you know where you are?" he asks me, "Y—ye—" I try but the word doesn't come out and I groan, "it's normal to feel frustrated but in time everything should go to the way they were. So just blink" I nod in agreement.

He asks me a few more questions and runs some tests, when he finishes "Try and get some rest, I'll come back when I have the test results" I nod.

"Would you like to have someone from your family with you in the meantime?" He asks me and I nod.

A few minutes later my mom came bursting through the door, "Baby girl you're awake" she said reaching me, tears in her eyes.

"You gave me quite a scare," she tells me, "I—I'm sor—" she puts her hand up, "don't try to speak baby the doctor told us it would only frustrate you at the moment so don't push yourself. We're just happy you're awake" tears stream down my face, she wipes them away "don't cry baby, momma is here with you. So is Kai, Rachel and the rest of your friends," she says caressing my hair, "you know Kai hasn't left the hospital for anything but shower and come back, he has been by your side this past thirty days".

Thirty days?! I've been out for thirty days? But if he hasn't left my side what about his position as Mayor? No, no, no this wasn't supposed to happen, I saved him so he could be able to fulfill his dream.

My mom looks at me and like always she can decipher me, what I'm feeling, what I want to do, you name it and she will figure it out with just a glance.

"Don't worry, he'll explain to you later, now you need to rest" She cuddles me and I drift to sleep.

When I open my eyes again, it's day again and instead of my mom, Kai has his head on the bed near my hand, I try to touch his head, and pushing hard I manage to caress his head, his head snaps up and my hand falls.

"Hi beautiful" he cups my face and kisses me and I feel hot tears on my face I try to push him off me for a bit and when I see his face tears are streaming down his face, tears that turn into sobs "baby" I manage out, that seems to pull him back, "say that again" he whispers, "baby" I try to smile, he captures my lips back into his and I groan in pain "oh sorry baby, I'm so sorry," he says.

"Marry me" My eyes widen, did he just propose? "Please marry me, Giovanna, I can't live without you baby, you are my other half, my soulmate, the love of my life, my queen" he pauses reaching for something in his pocket he opens the lid and I gasp, in the middle of the box is the most gorgeous ring I have saw.

Centered round diamond ring paved with tinny diamonds with a gold band, "I want to navigate this thing we call life hand in hand with you until we're old and wrinkly" he takes the ring out of the box "With my heart on the line I ask you Giovanna Marie Hathaway, will you give me the honor of becoming your husband?" I stare at him, "You are the love of my life Giovanna so will you become my wife?"
