Back in my apartment, I started packing, good thing, I went to enough State dinners with my parents to have the appropriate dress code for this job.

When John called me into his office this morning I was expecting questions as to why I was in a police station the night before, since nothing escapes that man, but no he had to be a fucking babysitting assignment.

I keep packing when my phone starts ringing, I look at the caller ID and smile, "As I live and breathe Rachel Coleman", my best friend laughs on the other side of the line.

"Hey boo, how are ya?" She asks me, "I'm as good as anyone can be," I tell her putting my AirPods on and throwing my phone on the bed so I can keep packing.

"I wanted to call yesterday but I know you probably needed to be left alone". "Yeah, my parents called, which was a-ma-zing"

"I bet, listen, I called because I need backup tonight," she says, "I can't Rach, my new assignment starts tonight". "Fuck me" she curses.

"Why, what's wrong?" I ask warning bells ringing in my ears, "I'm meeting a few of Zain's friends tonight".

"You got this sunshine, they won't know what hit them, you're an extraordinary woman, if they can see it it's their lost".

"I know, I know" she sighs "Are we still on for brunch on Sunday? Em been talking about this restaurant for a while and I'm ready to see what the hype is all about".

Shit, I curse under my breath I completely forgot. "I'll be there" I promise her, we gossip a bit more, and after a while, we end the call.

Rachel, myself, and Emily have been best friends since we were fourteen. We met when my parents shipped me and my brother to a fancy boarding school because they didn't have time to raise their own kids. Since then it has been the five of us ever since. Rachel, Emily, Luca, Noah, and me. Emily lives in L.A. now, but she flies to New York once a month for our monthly brunch date. Luca disappeared on us when my brother died, so is just me and the girls now.

I finish packing and glance around my apartment one last time at least until November, that's when the election is over.

I take a cab back to Kai's penthouse, my new temporary home, after a short drive, I pay the taxi driver and collect my bags from the trunk. Walking inside of the building I come to a stop when I see Kai coming out of the private elevator with a petite blonde, and I take the time to properly assess the person who's supposed to be my boyfriend for the foreseeable future.

The man is easily 6'3, with Icy blue eyes, a sharp jawline, broad shoulders, tailored suit, that seems to be custom-made and hugs his body perfectly.

He doesn't look like a politician, he looks more like a fucking model, maybe if we met under different circumstances I would allow myself a ride, but since he's a client and I have a rule never to mix business with pleasure.

My nana always said we don't shit in the place we eat. Kai comes to a stop when he sees me, "darling" he plants a kiss on my cheek, I glare him down and he chuckles.

"Where may you be going sweetness?" I threw him the pet name he called me in his office earlier today.

"Last minute interview, I'll be back in time for dinner," he says and starts walking, trailing behind him the petite blonde, that I now recognize, from the personnel file I got, as Hannah Ford, one of his assistants.

I run after him and grab his wrist, he looks at me "Can I have a minute?" I glance at Hannah "alone".

Kai looks at Hannah "You can go ahead to the car Hannah", "Yes, Mr. Hastings," she says looking at him and then eyeing me. Great just what I needed, a woman infatuated with Kai.

"Kai, I believe you hired us to do a job and that is to keep you safe, my team can't do that if you don't tell us everything in advance" I state.

"I'm sorry Giovanna, this was a last-minute thing. Richard called me right after you left and I have to give this interview" he tells me, I search his face to see any signs of dishonesty but can't find any, but then again he's a politician I sigh but give in "Text me the location of the interview and one of my men will meet you there".

"That won't be necessary," he says, "The address now," I say through greeted teeth.

He throws his hands up, "Fine, fine" he pulls his phone from his pocket and sends me a text with the address.

"Someone will meet you there," I tell him as he starts walking away and I yell "What time are your friends coming?"

"They'll be here at eight thirty pm" he winks and leaves. I groan, this is going to be the longest seven months of my life.

I'm unpacking when I get a text, from the security I assigned to Kai this afternoon.

Mason: Interview is over, E.T.A 30 min

Giovanna: Any incidents?

Mason: Nothing to report boss

Giovanna: Good, after you drop him off, go rest and meet me back at his house at 0100

Mason: Copy that

Thirty minutes later, Kai comes strolling into the walking closet, in the bedroom. He eyes my stuff and then turns to me "Is that all of the stuff you have?"

"No, but I gathered it would probably be better to buy a few things according to your events, so I only brought the essentials"

"Already taking advantage of your rich boyfriend sunshine?" he says smiling but I pick up a bitter tone under the smile I chuckle "Let me make something clear sunshine I don't need your money" I smirk and saunter in his direction "I don't work because I need to, I work because I want to" throwing my hair over my shoulder "I've got millions sitting on my account, depending on a man is the last thing I would want or need" I smirk "My mom always told me Gi you should be a woman that a man needs, not a woman that needs a man and that's exactly how I've lived my whole life I'm not about to change that now rich boyfriend or not," I turn and walk to the bathroom locking the door.

My mom is a Supreme Court Judge and my dad worked his way up the Air Force ranks, being currently, Air Force Chief of Staff General, so me and my brother had trust funds set up for us from the moment we took our first breaths, but instead of spending mine, like most rich kids, I invested since my freshman year in high school.
