24.

Life goes on, yet I'm stunk behind it
And they keep moving the haven
Final call, still unsure about it
(Wildered feat. Cody Francis-Haven)

"Herrera! Warren! On the roof!" Beckett ordered. They were facing a serious fire affecting a pharmaceutical factory and they needed to ventilate the roof as soon as possible.

"With all the respect, I think it's better if Warren..." Andy tried to say, but Beckett cut her off.

"I am the Captain, I am the one who decides what to do. On the roof, now! If Warren has problems doing his job only because of an accident occurring months ago, well, he can change job again." the man replied, harsh. Andy glared at him, but didn't say anything. She and Ben climbed the ladder and went to the roof, starting the procedure for the ventilation.

"I didn't want to imply that you can't do this job, Ben." Andy said. "I just think you could have been more useful helping with the triage."

"I know." the man reassured her. "The roof is ventilated, Captain. Copy." he then informed Beckett.

"Good. Come down.". When Warren and Andy went back to the firetruck, the situation was a mess. They were all excellent paramedics, but it was obvious that having someone like Ben helping with the triage would have been useful in that moment

"Hey you, no! Not like this!" he shouted, running towards the new probie, McCallister's nephew, who was taking care of a woman. Andy shook her head and snorted. She was so tired of Beckett, he was completely out of control and a mere puppet in the union's hands. It was like he never thought about the consequences of his decisions and he could never be held accountable for his actions and considering that he was the captain, that whole situation was incredibly serious and dangerous.

"Our job here is done! Back to the station!" he said, getting in the fire truck.

"Andy, are you coming?" Travis called the Lieutenant. The Latina turned around and faked a smile.

"Yes, I was just... Never mind"

"Andy..." the man muttered. "I know how you're feeling. I feel the same."

"We need to stop him." Andy said. "And this time, once for all.".

"Okay girls, Walton will be here at any moment." Carina stated.

"What do you want me to tell her?" Keira asked, causing her two foster moms to frown.

"What do you mean, sweetie?" Maya questioned.

"Well, I guess you'd like me to tell her something. You know, for the..."

"Bambina, stop." Carina stopped her. "Listen, I need to ask you a thing and I want you to answer sincerely, okay?". Keira nodded, her eyes betraying a certain anxiety. "Do you really want to live with us? Because if it's not what you need, we can look for a better place for you to go. You deserve to feel safe and comfortable and if staying here makes you feel the exact opposite we don't want to force you.". The girl was speechless. She had been fostered before and no one had ever cared about her feelings. All they wanted was money, nothing else. She opened her mouth to say something, when someone rang the doorbell. She jolted, knowing too well who was at the door.

"Mrs Walton, it's a pleasure. Please, come inside." Maya welcomed the social worker, the fakest of the smiles painted on her face. Truth was that they were all so full of anxiety. Maya and Carina didn't want to lose Keira, but at the same time they wanted her to feel free to make her own choice, while on the other hand the girl wanted nothing but go back to sleep and forget about the real world for a while.
