31.

This constant sadness is a mix of the things I miss
Combined with all the hate of things that I can't forget
Take every memory ingrained in me
Erase it from my thoughts so I can sleep
(Too Close To Touch-What I Wish I Could Forget)

"May I come in?".

Maya and Carina glanced at each other, definitely confused. In front of them there was Drew Farris, the head of union of SFD. Carina remembered him from the disastrous SFD ball that ended up with the hotel floor collapsing. On the other hand, Maya knew Farris quite well. They weren't exactly friends, at all. He was a good firefighter, but they had never really gotten along well.

"Excuse me, what?" she blurted out.

"I asked if I can come in. I need to talk, to the both of you.". The man was about to cross the threshold, but Carina stopped him.

"With all the respect no, you can't." she told him. "Our foster daughter had a pretty intense day and having you around wouldn't be a good idea.". The man scratched his head, clearly not expecting such an answer.

"Okay, maybe we can go elsewhere."

"No offense, but my wife is right, Captain. Our daughter had a draining day and, to be honest, we are exhausted too." Maya said.

"Can you at least tell us what this is about?" Carina questioned. Farris waved a hand through his face and let out a sigh.

"Beckett." he answered, finally. "It's about Beckett.". The two wives widened their eyes in shock, speechless. "And I think I need you to come with me to the station.".

"What are you doing here? Where is Keira?". The two women turned around. Ben was in front of them, quite confused by their presence.

"Farris wanted us to come here. He and Ross asked us a lot of questions about Beckett and the day we saved Keira, so we had no choice but ask Amelia to stay with her today." Maya explained. Ben scratched his forehead and let out a nervous laughter.

"I can't believe it's happening. I thought Chief Ross would have never had the courage to do this."

"Wait, did you know about this investigation?" Maya asked. The man nodded and snapped his tongue.

"They've been questioning us all for days."

"So is this what we are now? People forced to stab our mates in the back?" Maya snapped, unexpectedly.

"Bambina..." Carina tried to calm her down, in vain.

"I need to go to the bathroom." Maya muttered, heading to the locker room. Carina was about to follow her, but Ben stopped her.

"Let her go. She clearly needs some space." he told her. "I get her. Last year was terrible and she is probably reliving everything.

"It's my fault." Carina sobbed. "I asked Andy to do something about Beckett, because I was worried about her going back to work. Dio, I didn't mean to..."

"Carina, enough." Ben stopped her rambling. "This investigation is necessary. To be honest, we are all happy Ross decided to act. The whole situation was unsustainable, with Beckett putting us all in danger to allow McCallister's nephew to shine. What happened that day is the last of his problems.". Carina nodded and sat down on a chair, her head between her head. She raised her gaze, meeting Ben's tender eyes.

"It's just... It's hard for me, too." she stated.

"I know." Ben said. "I know.".
