CHAPTER FIFTEEN.
narrative

february 4th, 2023: iowa city, ia

nayvie's heart weighed heavy as she trudged through the snow-covered paths to their apartment complex, the bitter chill of february gnawing at her bones. She missed kate more than words could convey, her absence a constant ache in the depths of her soul.

harper sensed nayvie's distress as they walked side by side. "nayvs, you seem kinda down lately, and know it's about kate. what's going on?"

nayvie sighed, her breath forming misty clouds in the frosty air. "i don't know, harper. it's just... with kate's basketball schedule and all, we barely get to see each other anymore. it's like we're drifting apart."

harper nodded sympathetically, her bright blue eyes reflecting the concern etched on nayvie's face. "i get it, but you and kate have something special. you'll find a way to make it work."

nayvie offered a weak smile, grateful for caitlin's unwavering support. "thanks, harps. i hope you're right."

as they reached their apartment, the familiar scent of home offered a little comfort in the wake of nayvie's turbulent emotions. she glanced at her phone, half-hoping for a message from kate, but the screen remained stubbornly blank.

nayvie sank onto her bed, the silence of the apartment echoing the emptiness she felt inside. she longed to hear kate's voice, to feel her touch, but the demands of the basketball season seemed to pull her love further away with each passing day.

just then, a knock on her bedroom door shattered the stillness. as she opened the door, she is met with harper a mischievous grin playing on her lips.

"i come bearing gifts," she declared, holding up a bag of popcorn and a stack of DVDs. "movie night, just like when we were in highschool."

Nayvie couldn't help but smile at harper's enthusiasm. "thanks, harps, i could definitely use the distraction."

as they settled in for the evening, the laughter and camaraderie they shared offered a brief respite from the turmoil of nayvie's heart. and though kate's absence loomed large in the quiet moments between scenes, nayvie found comfort in the warmth of harper's friendship, a reminder that she was not alone in her struggles.

as the night dragged on, nayvie's thoughts spiraled deeper into the abyss of worry, her heart heavy with the weight of their strained relationship. just as she was about to confide in harper, a timid knock echoed through the apartment, jolting nayvie from her reverie.

harper exchanged a knowing glance with nayvie before hurrying to answer the door, revealing kate standing in the hallway, her expression a mix of apprehension and regret.

"baby," Kate murmured, her voice barely above a whisper as she shifted nervously on her feet. "can we talk?"

nayvie's heart raced at the sight of kate, her emotions swirling like a tempest inside her chest. "yeah, sure. come in."

as kate stepped into the apartment, the tension between them crackled like lightning, the air heavy with unspoken words.

"i've missed you," Nayvie confessed, her voice tinged with a hint of sadness as she met kate's gaze.

kate's shoulders slumped with the weight of guilt, her eyes betraying the turmoil raging within her. "i know, nayvs. i've missed you too. it's just... basketball has been consuming me, and I feel like I'm losing sight of what's important."

nayvie's heart clenched at kate's admission, the pain of their distance etched into every line of her face. "i get it, kate. but it's like we're living parallel lives right now, and I don't know how much longer i can handle it."

kate reached out, tentatively brushing nayvie's cheek with her fingertips, a silent plea for forgiveness written in her eyes. "i don't want to lose you, nayvie. you mean everything to me."

tears pricked at the corners of nayvie's eyes, her resolve crumbling in the face of kate's vulnerability. "i don't want to lose you either, kate. but we can't keep living like this, i need you to make time for me"

kate's breath caught in her throat, her heart heavy with the weight of nayvie's words. "i know, and i'm sorry. i'll do whatever it takes to make things right between us,
my love . i promise."

as they stood locked in each other's gaze, the walls of resentment and hurt crumbled, leaving behind a raw and unfiltered love that burned brighter than ever before. And though the road ahead would be fraught with obstacles, nayvie knew that as long as they faced them together, their love would endure, unbreakable and unwavering.
