"She's right she can go to her friends place. Vihaan you very well know that this will affect your reputation if the press gets to know. Just look at her, she looks like someone from the streets!" Ma says with a dramatic gasp.

Shivanya drops her chin down to her chest like she has already given up her self for some sacrifice. Not on my watch.

"Stop talking about her! If you say another word about her I am done." I growl out at my mother. I always knew she was this way, I don't even know why I am surprised at how she's behaving right now.

"And stop thinking about what others tell Ma. I want Shivanya to stay here. With me. And that's final." I say in a firm voice.

Shivanya looks at me pleading with her heartbreaking eyes. "Please don't fight." She whispers.

Without heeding to her pleas Ma says, "Very well then. This is my house, I say that she cannot stay here. And my word is final." She retorts stubbornly, giving Shivanya a patronizing stare.

This house belongs to Papa. I have an apartment in the city. My family wanted me to live here although I didn't want to. When Mama brings up this topic of which house belongs to whom, I decide what to do.

"Then I am done. I don't want to live in a place where people respect money and reputation more than human beings. Most of all I won't let Shivanya to live in a place where she is not respected." I glare at Ma, disappointed at her for being so petty.

"You are leaving us for a girl who looks like that." She makes a vague gesture with her hands in Shivanya's direction. I immediately tense "I thought your refusal for marrying is your disinterest in matrimony. But if I had known that she is the reason, I would've broken this up a long time ago. What do you want girl? money, status?" She questions Shivanya in a haughty voice.

"I-" she tries to answer but shakes her head. Unable to look at her being helpless, I give Ma a hard stare and say, "You disappoint me Ma. You lost me today. Goodbye." I say and hold Shivanya's arm leading her to exit while she drags her feet in pain.

My whole family stares at us with various emotions.

"Vihaan! Beta listen to me!" Ma shouts.

Not anymore.

I silently vow to myself. I am not going to listen to what she says anymore. I always endured her hostile behaviour towards class difference just because she was my mother. But how she behaved today with Shivanya sealed the deal for me.

Never again.

When we arrive outside Shivanya lets go of my arm and shakes her head, "You must go inside. I am leaving. I don't want to cause you any trouble more than I already have done. Please." She pleads.

"Not happening. Come let's go." I say and open the passenger door. She looks at me for a while and the determination in my face makes her sigh.

"I am sorry." She breathes out.
