TUTOR CENTRE; 4:30 pmThe clock struck 4:30 as I sit at the table in the tutor centre across from an empty chair. I tap my fingers against the table impatiently as I glance at the door. Of course he was going to be late, what did I expect from him.
He rushes in, breathing heavily. His hair was slightly desheveled from soccer practice and cheeks flushed from being in the hot sun, he was still in his jersey too.
"You're late."
"Yeah I know, Sorry," He apologises, not seeming sincere. I had a feeling he didn't do that often.
I shrug him off, opening the textbook to start off the session.
"I don't get this," He says a while after I assigned him some practice questions. He turns his book around to face me.
I scan over it before explaining to him, "you have to use a square plus 2ab square plus b square."
He nods when he finally gets it. He wasn't dumb, she just had trouble applying his focus. He knew all the formulas but never when to use them.
"how are you so good at this?" He asks charmingly. I narrow my eyes slightly and scoff.
"what?" He asks confused.
"I know what you're doing ok? Well right now I'm teaching you math. You see this textbook, this is me I am math," I ramble. I was slighting aggravated at his compliment. I know he was trying to use his charm to get out of things per usual. In the short time that I have been here I had seen him do it on multiple occasions.
"what's that supposed to mean?"
"It means, you can play your 'Im Mr Connor Noon, big shot soccer player, scoring my touchdowns' on someone else because math don't care and neither do I."
"Okay, first of all, I don't play football so it's goals not 'touchdowns'. Secondly, why are you so mad with me what have I ever done to you,"
A scoff of a laugh escaped my lips as I lifts an eyebrow at him, "You were literally such a jerk to me the first time we met! Ring any bells?"
"You just caught me at a bad time alright. We just got off on the wrong foot," He tries.
I mutter a 'whatever', turning my attention back on my own work, telling Connor to do the same.
"Okay I think that's it for today," I close my book. "Just a few notes, Connor. I really think you have the potential it's just you don't know how to apply yourself."
"I get, Thanks," He says, genuinely. I give him a half-smile as I get up and pack my bag.
As I walk out the tutor centre, I hear Connor rush up to me causing me to slow down.
"Are you free this friday?" He asks abruptly, after reaching my pace walking along side me.
"I don't think so, my brother has soccer tryouts and I'm going," I explain.
"That was what I was asking. Do you maybe wanna grab something to eat after? For tutor stuff of course," I raise my eyebrow skeptically.
"Just because I'm tutoring you doesn't mean I'm your friend or anything," I clarify. "But okay, fine."
"Alright, I'll see you friday sarge," He winks. Ugh, what did I just say yes to.
