*TRING TRING TRING*

Nanon woke up to his alarm clock going off, rudely interrupting his dream where he was sitting on a comfortable bed, about to devour a plate of warm food.

He groaned and put a hand out to shut it up, but then in his attempt to locate the vile object, also spotted the time.

7:00 AM.

Fuck he was late. No, he was beyond late.

He was supposed to wake up at 5:00 AM instead, get ready, clean the entire house make breakfast for the entire family, make sure Dew ate his, take the grocery list from his aunt and leave for college on time. But that was all fucked now because Nanon was late. He was late by two whole hours.

One may assume that the implications of being late were limited to his professor telling him off, but no, this also meant that today he will not be given any breakfast as punishment and that he will have to make dinner for everyone, when he came back exhausted from his long day.

This was not going to be okay.

The deal with his aunt was that Nanon would take care of the chores in the morning, so her and her husband could wake up conveniently and in exchange they would let Nanon have two meals a day and a roof over his head. And by roof they meant the small dingy room that was the attic, with one window, a ratty mattress and a hand-me-down wardrobe that according to his aunt did not go very well with the furniture in the house so had to be thrown away.

If on any given day, he failed and Aunt Som woke up to a dirty house and an empty kitchen, she would have the right to refuse Nanon breakfast and as compensation he would have to make dinner and clean up after.

Well, that was the deal and while Nanon mostly stuck to his words, his adoptive parents did not. On the rare occasion that he had been late in the past, they had not let him eat food for the entire day, slapped him around a bit, more than usual, and on one occasion even took away his mattress. Not that it mattered much, the mattress was barely anything anyway.

This was why Nanon always ensured that he woke up on time but sometimes, on very rare occasions, he felt so tired, drained to his bone, that he could not wake up even when he wanted to. He had followed his schedule to the T even when he had a raging fever, but somedays his body just gave up. Like today. One would imagine that even if he was late, his aunt would at least make sure that he was up and working, but no, she never did. She preferred waking up and doing everything by herself, so that the couple could have the pleasure of punishing Nanon.

At least that's what he thought.

One may ask Nanon as to why would he put up with them, but the answer was simple. One that he was grateful to them for taking him in after he lost his parents in a horrid car crash, they put a roof over his head and allowed him to continue his studies; two he had no other alternative. He had to put up with them at least till he finished law school and was able to stand on his own two feet. But there was still time for that.

Nanon had to admit that they had not been the happiest about letting him continue with his studies, but they had no option. If they stopped him from going to school, his Dad's lawyer, Mr. Signto, would have stopped their monthly allowance from the trust that his Dad had set up to ensure Nanon's education. Not that Nanon ever got to see that money. He was just grateful that he got to study.

And because of his dedication, he ultimately got a full-ride scholarship for law school, and could finally see a glimmer of chance to turn his dream of becoming a lawyer into a reality. The best part was that his uncle and aunt did not care because they still got to keep the full amount they received.
