Chapter 62: Stealthy Poison Master, Mukotsu

Hidden away from sight was a short old man with large creepy squinted eyes adorned with red markings. The rest of his body was clothed in white robes, a bandana to cover his head, and a cloth covering the lower half of his face. The man let out a low chuckle as he reached into his basket and pulled out one of the covered containers there. He removed the covering and held it under the cloth, taking in the substance inside his mouth as if to consume it. He laughed maniacally to himself before he directed the container towards the battlefield letting the potent substance spread and run free.

Inuyasha glared at Jakotsu, feeling his patience running thin from his vague responses. "Jakotsu I'll ask one more time. Was it Naraku who gave you the sacred jewel shard?"

The mercenary looked off to the side and he lightly scratched his cheek in thought. "I'm not sure. I've never met the man."

"That's it. I've had it with your stupid little jokes." the half-demon declared, ready to continue the fight.

However, everyone's attention was drawn to the black gas that was heading towards them from a steep hill. Jakotsu stepped back and clicked his teeth in frustration at being interrupted. "Just when it was getting fun. Damn you Mukotsu!" He cursed before looking over to Inuyasha. "Inuyasha you better leave while you're still able."

Inuyasha was left bewildered at the mercenary's warning as he watched him run away. "What the heck are you talking about?" he asked until he yelped in pain when the gas touched him and burned his foot. The half-demon quickly jumped away landing beside his friends as he hopped on his toes from the burning sensation. "Ow! What is that stuff?"

"It's poisonous gas," Kagome announced.

Jakotsu waved goodbye as his figure slowly disappeared into the toxin gasses. "See you soon Inuyasha."

Inuyasha scoffed and gritted his teeth. "Man is he annoying."

"The question is where is the poison coming from?" Miroku inquired.

The group left the area to create distance from the poisonous gas and found themselves in a secluded area to safely talk and reassess the situation. "Does it hurt Sango?" Kagome asked while applying ointment to her cut.

"I'm okay." the demon slayer said with a small nod.

Inuyasha turned with a hardened gaze in the direction the mercenary ran off. "I don't think Jakotsu could have gone very far yet."

Miroku gave him a curious look. "You'll follow?"

"Well, what do you think? I still haven't gotten any information about Naraku out of him," he responded matter of factly.

"Yes, but aren't you worried about that poisonous gas?" the monk inquired.

"What do you mean?"

"Well Jakotsu seemed to know something about it." he pointed out.

The half-demon picked up on what he was insinuating. "You're right, maybe it's another one of the Band of Seven." he theorized.

"But Jakotsu seemed to be in danger too," Sango interjected.

Inuyasha looked back and gave Miroku a stern expression. "Miroku, you stay here and protect the girls."

"Ok." They watched as Inuyasha turned and jumped away to hunt down Jakotsu, leaving them to fend for themselves.

Kagome stared at the spot where Inuyasha once was and frowned a little. "Do you think he'll be okay?"

"Inuyasha will be fine. He may be hot-headed but he's not that careless." Kagami said with an encouraging smile as she dug around in her bag.
