Princesses don't look back on their lives and think
I was perfect
I was everything I wanted to be
I was good enough
Princesses don't have that luxury
They feel like they're too much
And not enough
I'm not allowed to be myself
I have to be myself or else
Or else what
Or else I'm not perfect
Perfection comes at a heavy cost
Of living in a way
Where no one suspects
How over the edge we seem to be
Do you see it in our posture
The way we speak
Our clothes
Our hair
Or heaven forbid
Our eyes
Don't look at our eyes
It's not that you won't like what you see
It's that everyone who looks us in our eyes
terrifies us
Because our eyes are what give our thoughts
And feelings
Away
That's why we present ourselves the way we do
Arms to your side, never in front
Elbows off the table
Head up
Chin down
We walk with precision
We talk with precision
With confidence
Holding words above their head
Using phrases that are practiced and pointed
We dress like we aren't made for our worlds
With items to layer
And disgustingly entitled composure that screams
I'm worth more
And so much better
Than the pathetic lives I sit still for
Even our hair is perfected
That's how it should be
Though
We're a little less strict with that
It's one of those things where we like to say
It's good enough
But even good enough
Can't compare to the expectation
Of what they hold us to
So then it goes back to our eyes
The one wall of truth you can always look back to
Eyes lie
That's what it seems like from the outside at least
You could look me in the eyes
On a day that seems perfect
And realize
She's having shot up time
She doesn't want to be here
She wants to sit in her room with no one to bother her
And in my room
You could look me in the eyes
While I'm wearing pajamas
I'm slouching
My hair's up messy
But you'd see
Absolute peace
And relief that has never found more comfort in being alone
It's in the princess's eyes
Just be considerate
Look
Be kindAnd understand
That if you mean the world to her
A princess's eyes
Will tell you everything
