Flashback: fifteen years ago

My mother had made us go to bed when we finished our little dinner. I couldn't sleep so I was just laying at my bed trying to hide the voices I was hearing from outside the room. Father and mother were talking with James and my mother from time to time, was raising her voice. I couldn't hear many things, but the worlds I was hearing were irrelevant.

Half an hour passed and I sat cross-legged at my bed with my ear at the wall. "Letty sit down and sleep" I heard Edward's sleepy voice and he turned around to face me. The dim light that the candle was giving us, I could see clearly his sleepy eyes.

"I can't sleep. They just talk all the time and I can't sleep. They are talking for something big I tell you" I replied and lowered my head so I could reach his eyes' level. To that his eyes went wide and looked at me with one eyebrow raised. "I heard something about pirates, and treasure. So something must be going on"

"What? For that you are doing like that? " he questioned and turned his back facing me, trying to find his comfortable spot once again. "James is a privateer, so it would be normal to meet pirates at his journeys"

"Yeah I know but it's not lik-"

"It's not like what Scarlett? We will ask him tomorrow to tell us some stories and play with us. Like every other time he visits Ayr. So goodnight" he said and closed his eyes.

I couldn't help but feel a little curious at what they were saying outside. So as every little curious chid I went to towards the door to hear a little better.

"...that's why you're here. To deliver me this message right?"

"Yeah" James voice said and there was a pause. "It was her last wish, if I can trust father's words"

"So he is alive huh?" Father questioned and after that was heard a third voice, more feminine.

"You always are a messenger of bad news. Because of what you are, you are bad news! You are like them. You are one of them!" This time my mother spoke, or rather yelled. In her voice it was a tint of sadness.

"Look dear aunt. I came here only to make my mother's last wish true. I had no intention of coming here this soon. I never wanted to step my foot at this bloody port ever again. I was going to hold my promise to you, but this was an emergency."

"Ha! Right like hell you are going to hold your promise. You little filthy -"

My mother's voice was interrupted by a loud sound. I assumed it was my father's hands touching the table's wood. "So, now it's only you and your father in your family right? Even Connor didn't survive the illness"

Connor? Wait, 'it was her last wish'. Is aunt Melinda and Connor dead? Did they passed away? Why? When?

"Yes. And I wonder how did father survived? Maybe because he wasn't helping them, or being as close as it should be for the illness to be transferred."

"And when are you leaving?" Father asked.

"At dawn. I told my crew to do whatever business they had before dawn because we are sailing at that time. Those who will be late will stay behind."

What? At dawn? Why is James leaving at dawn? He didn't stay for one day at least. Why?

"At last. And when are you going to came back?" My mother answered.

"As our promise was, from the time I step my feet here and leave, then after five years the least."

"Thank god because I could care less when you will come back here."
