TW: Miscarriage

May 25th, 2024

Taylor woke up that morning unable to shake the feeling of dread that loomed over her. She couldn't place what exactly was making her feel upset, just that something wasn't right. Figuring maybe she was starting to come down with the cold that had been being passed among the backup dancers for the past several weeks, she decided to go back to bed since she needed all the rest she could get if she was going to pull off a show while feeling like this.

When she woke up a few hours later, she was immediately struck by how badly her back hurt, followed by a wave of extreme nausea. She grabbed her phone from the nightstand, sending off a quick text to Tree to let her know that she wasn't feeling well. Tree texted back almost immediately, clarifying whether or not she was asking to see the doctor. Taylor let out a shaky breath as she sent the text confirming that she thought it would be a good idea.

"Please be okay," she whispered to herself, letting her hand absentmindedly drift to her stomach.

It had only been two weeks since she had found out she was pregnant, nervously taking the test in her Paris hotel room. She had immediately panicked, thinking about how horrible the timing was even though she and Travis had already talked about wanting kids together someday. But Travis had been at her side immediately, reassuring her that they could handle this and he would be with her 100% of the way.

They had arranged for an ultrasound with the private doctor traveling with the tour for the following morning, which meant that they got to see their baby for the first time on Mother's Day, immediately falling in love with the tiny blob on the screen. The doctor told them that Taylor was about 7 weeks pregnant, which placed her due date right around the end of December. She knew immediately that she would need to reschedule the final leg of the Eras Tour, but it would be entirely worth it to bring this tiny baby into their lives.

The wait for the doctor to arrive to the suite seemed to take forever, and Taylor could feel her anxiety growing as the pain in her back worsened. She knew in the back of her mind that this probably wasn't going to be good news, but there was still a small part of her that was holding out hope. Maybe if she just curled up and hid under the blankets she could go back to sleep and wake up feeling better.

Tree was at her side a few minutes later, gently pulling her into a hug and reassuring her that the doctor would be there soon. Taylor let her tears fall freely now that she wasn't alone, allowing Tree to comfort her.

"I'm scared, Tree," Taylor admitted.

"I know, sweetie. I'm sure the doctor will be here soon. Do you want to get up and change?" Tree asked gently.

"I just want to stay here. If I get up and get changed, I won't be able to pretend it'll be okay anymore," Taylor mumbled, "I want Trav."

"His flight lands in about 2 hours. I'll make sure someone is there to bring him straight here," Tree reassured her.

The doctor arrived a few minutes later, and Taylor quickly explained what she was feeling. She went through a quick examination before informing Taylor that she would need to do a quick ultrasound as well. Taylor reluctantly agreed, having already seen that she was bleeding and knowing this wasn't going to be good news.

The room was silent as the doctor set up and performed the ultrasound. Tree held Taylor's hand tightly, acting as her support person through this incredibly difficult moment. After a few minutes, the doctor confirmed that Taylor was experiencing a miscarriage. Taylor felt like the room was spinning as the doctor continued to explain that someone would deliver the medications she would need to take, going over the instructions with Tree.

When the doctor left a few minutes later, Tree helped Taylor get settled back into the bed, bringing her a fresh bottle of water. She moved around in near silence, not wanting to say the wrong thing and further upset Taylor. Taylor seemed relatively emotionless, but Tree knew she was doing everything she could to hold herself together until she was alone.

"Taylor," Tree began, "I'm just going to step out for a minute and let everyone know that we're postponing the show."

"No," Taylor said simply.

"No? Do you need me to stay with you?" Tree asked.

"No, we're not postponing this show," Taylor stated.

"Taylor, I don't think that's a very good idea. I mean, you can barely move right now and the doctor just said you'll probably feel worse once you take the pills," Tree explained gently.

"I just... I just need the distraction. I can't just sit here and be sad and also have to deal with letting everyone down on top of it all," Taylor rambled.

"Shhh. Take a breath. We don't have to decide anything right now. Travis should be here in a few minutes, and we don't have to be at the arena for a few more hours. Let's see how you're feeling and we'll make the call later. You know I'll have your back either way," Tree promised.

"I want Travis," Taylor pouted, "And I want to do the fucking show."
