Travis slowly blinked his eyes open as he tried to adjust to the sunlight streaming through the bedroom window. Taylor was nowhere to be found, and her side of the bed was cold. He quickly glanced at his phone, realizing it was nearly 10:30 already. He had been up most of the night, tending to Carson so Taylor could get some rest.
Their daughter was almost 9 months old now and was seemingly getting her first tooth, which had led to quite a few long nights with a fussy baby. The brunt of the nighttime soothing had fallen to Taylor during the week since Travis was so exhausted from minicamp, so he had been the one to get up every time Carson woke up last night. It had been a night filled with lots of tears and snuggles as he attempted to soothe her through the pain. They had spent most of the night in the large plush rocker in the corner of the nursery, rocking gently as Travis whispered to his daughter and reassured her that she would be okay.
Before Travis could get out of bed, the bedroom door opened quietly as Taylor peeked inside to see if he was still asleep. Once she saw that he was awake, she carefully made her way over to the bed. Carson was wrapped tightly to her chest in one of the many carriers they had for her, chewing on a frozen washcloth and babbling away to herself as Taylor carefully balanced a tray of breakfast food.
"Happy Father's Day," Taylor greeted him.
She placed the tray on the nightstand before crawling into the bed next to Travis. She freed Carson from the carrier, laughing as their daughter immediately reached for her Dad. Carson was definitely a Daddy's girl, and she had been missing him while he was busy with football responsibilities lately. Travis was more than happy to scoop her into his arms, tickling her belly and making her giggle.
"How's our little princess doing this morning? We had another really rough night," Travis asked.
"She seems much more herself this morning. Look in her mouth," Taylor said.
"Her tooth popped?" Travis asked excitedly as he saw the little bits of white sticking out of her lower gums.
"It sure did," Taylor said proudly, "I noticed it as soon as I got her out of the crib this morning."
"No wonder she was so fussy last night. You were working hard to get that tooth out, huh girlie?" Travis cooed, earning another giggle from Carson.
"Thank you for taking her last night. I didn't realize how badly I needed some sleep," Taylor admitted.
"Of course, baby. I'm glad you were able to get some rest," Travis replied, kissing Taylor's head.
Once Carson was settled happily between them, Taylor passed Travis a plate of the french toast she had made for him before grabbing her own plate. It was Travis's first Father's Day as a Dad, and she had big plans to make the day extra special for him. Both of their parents were coming by for dinner later and everyone was excited to see Carson. Taylor had gotten him a few different gifts in addition to some adorable handprint art she made with Carson.
Carson started to fuss after a little while, but Travis quickly scooped her up onto his lap. She happily nestled into his chest, calming down immediately.
"Someone has her Dada wrapped around her little finger," Taylor laughed.
"Da..." Carson cooed.
"That's right, girlie. Dada. C'mon, say 'Dada'," Travis urged.
"Da... Dada!" Carson giggled.
"Did you hear that, Tay? She said 'Dada'!" Travis said excitedly.
"Well I think that tops any gift I got you," Taylor laughed, "Happy Father's Day, Trav."

Later that evening, Travis was rocking Carson after her bath when his phone started to ring. Seeing it was Jason FaceTiming, he quickly accepted, adjusting the phone so you could see Carson resting against his chest. It had become somewhat of a routine that Wyatt and Ellie would call every Sunday night to see their cousin and tell Travis about their week. As usual, they got bored after about five minutes, running off to find something to play with before bedtime. Travis and Jason would usually spend a few minutes catching up after the girls were done talking, and tonight was no different.
"How was your first Father's Day?" Jason asked, smiling at the way Carson was rubbing her little hand against Travis's beard.
"Amazing. Couldn't have asked for a better day. Tay let me sleep in this morning and surprised me with breakfast in bed. We spent the morning just relaxing and playing with Carson, and then Mom and Dad and Tay's parents came over for dinner," Travis replied, "Oh, and this one decided to surprise us all by cutting her first tooth and coming out with her first word today."
"Really? What did she say?" Jason replied.
As if on cue, Carson popped her little head up, muttering "Dada" again before laying back against Travis's chest, clearly exhausted from a busy day playing with her grandparents.
"Well if that isn't the perfect Father's Day gift, I don't know what is. Congrats dude, it's the best feeling hearing that for the first time. Soak it up while she's little and sweet like that. If she's anything like her cousins she'll be trying to climb the roof in another year or two."
