Travis and Taylor made their way home in silence, neither ready to talk about what had just happened. Taylor was scheduled for a procedure tomorrow, having opted not to wait for the pregnancy to pass on its own. The thought of having to go through that was just too much for her to bear, so she was grateful to have been given a choice. She was also grateful that they couldn't do the procedure until the following day, which gave her some time to go home and fall apart in the comfort of her own bed.
She also knew that her mother would be there in a few hours. Travis had called her before they left the doctor's office, quickly explaining what was happening and helping to coordinate a plane to come pick her up so she could be there to support Taylor. Luckily, Andrea was more than willing to drop everything to be at her daughter's side the moment Travis told her what was happening. Taylor appreciated that he was the one to make that difficult phone call, as she didn't think she could bring herself to say the words out loud to tell her mother that their baby was gone. They hadn't even told their parents they were expecting yet, everything had happened so suddenly.
As soon as they got home, Taylor went straight to the bedroom, burying herself under the covers. Travis sat at her side, feeling incredibly helpless as he tried to think of anything that might bring her even a small semblance of comfort while also trying to deal with his own grief. Eventually he got her to agree to a bath, so he busied himself finding her favorite soaps and candles, preparing a calm environment in their en-suite bathroom. It helped him a bit to have a task to focus on, pulling him out of his own swirling thoughts for a few brief moments.
Shortly after Taylor finished her bath, she was back in their bed watching a random episode of Friends. Her eyes felt heavy both from exhaustion and tears, so Travis gently suggested she try to take a short nap while he went out to pick Andrea up from the airport. She reluctantly agreed, her eyes fluttering closed almost immediately after her head hit the pillows. Travis took a few minutes to feed the cats and straighten up the living room before making the short drive to wait for Andrea's flight.
As soon as Andrea was off the plane, she wrapped Travis in a tight embrace. That was all it took for him to break down, his tears flowing freely once again. Andrea's heart broke at the sight of this strong man in a state of such pure heartbreak. He was clearly in no condition to be driving, so she called for a ride, all the while keeping an arm around him and letting him have a moment to break down.
"Shh, I've got you honey," she cooed, guiding him to take a seat in the car where they would have more privacy, "I'm right here."
"I need to pull myself together," he mumbled, burying his face in his hands, "I need to be strong for Tay."
"Travis, look at me," Andrea started, "You're allowed to be upset about this too. I'd be concerned if you weren't. It's not your job to be the strong one here, this is something you guys need to work through together."
Andrea pulled him in for another hug, rubbing his back gently while he cried. Gradually, his sobs turned to hiccups, exhaustion taking over. Luckily their driver had arrived by then, so they quickly switched cars and started the drive back home to Taylor.
When they got back to the house, Taylor had just woken up from her short nap. She had only slept for about an hour, but the brief respite from her grief had been wonderful. As soon as she woke up, reality came crashing back, her grief feeling like a heavy weight over her chest. Travis led Andrea into the bedroom, knowing that Taylor was likely in no condition to get out of bed right now.
"Mama?" Taylor called out, seeing her mother in the doorway to the bedroom.
"I'm right here, my love," Andrea replied, rushing to her daughter's side, "It's all gonna be okay. You're okay."
