Millennium Dance Complex, Studio City (Saturday, May 13th, 2023 - 8:30pm)
anthony and maya handed out makeup kits to everyone. "we need to test the looks today. you know the drill—light but striking, enough to pop on stage without being too heavy."
i sat down with mckenna, who had set the camera aside to work on her own makeup. "do you think we'll finish the choreography in time?" she asked, glancing at me with concern.
"we always do," i reassured her, though inside, i was just as anxious. this year's competition felt even more intense, maybe because we were aiming for our 17th win.
"ready for your makeup, cam?" denisse asked, approaching with a palette of colors. what we usually do is we collect ideas and then maya and denisse try them on us so we can practice on ourselves. on the day of the competition there are only the teams, our teachers and some parents, and most of the time we are so stressed that we don't let anyone touch us so we have to do our own make-up. she began working on my face, her hands deft and practiced. "you're going to look amazing on stage."
"thanks, denisse," i said, trying to relax. i couldn't help but think about the pressure. winning World of Dance was everything to us, and we couldn't afford to slip up.
