Cabo San Lucas, México (Saturday, December 09th, 2023 - 11:30pm)
the music was loud, a deep bass thumping against my chest, and the lights flashed in sync with the beat, creating an almost dizzying effect. it was as if the world outside the club didn't exist, and all that mattered was this moment. i was with my friends, dancing, laughing, letting the night take me in. but deep down, i couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
austin wasn't here, and i had hoped the distance would be something i could handle, but tonight, with the warmth of the club wrapping around me and my friends all so present, it felt like i was missing something; or rather, someone.
"cami, come dance!" nicole called over the noise, a smile lighting up her face as she pulled me toward the crowd. i grinned, trying to shake off the weight in my chest, and let her drag me into the center. skye and saryn were already moving, and sophie followed close behind. everyone was laughing and carefree, their bodies flowing to the rhythm, and for a while, i lost myself in it.
then, of course, there was connor.
he was always there; somewhere in my periphery, but tonight, it felt different. he was always close, closer than usual. his eyes kept drifting toward me, and every time our gazes met, there was this unspoken tension, something in the way he looked at me that made my stomach twist in uncertainty.
"you look great," he said, sidling up to me in the crowd as we danced.
"thanks," i replied, not sure how to react. my smile was forced, but i kept moving, trying to play it cool.
he stepped closer, his hand brushing against mine, and i froze for a moment before pulling away slightly. "connor, i'm just trying to enjoy the night."
"i know," he murmured, a strange glint in his eyes. "just thought we could have some fun together."
i didn't say anything in response. instead, i laughed awkwardly and shifted away, losing myself in the group of friends that had gathered nearby. nicole was filming, dancing with skye, the camera catching flashes of their faces, but i kept my distance, avoiding the heat of connor's gaze.
the club was getting even more packed, the heat building as people swarmed around. i could barely hear my own thoughts over the music, but i couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. the way connor was looking at me; it wasn't just friendly. i had been here before, hadn't i? with austin. except tonight, i was the one who was confused.
