CHAPTER TEN!
. *. THE BIRTHDAY . * .

The Taylor's House, Tauranga - New Zealand (Thursday, June 8th, 2023 - 6:15pm)

alisha was repeating the question her son asked her, just a few seconds ago, in her mind. she knew this day was going to come sooner or later, of course, she didn't imagine it was going to happen hours before her son's eighteenth birthday.

austin has never been in a serious relationship, at least to her knowledge, so this hit her like a truck. she thought that by having sons, she would never be able to have this kind of talks with them, but she should have been wiser. austin is very soft-spoken and he's mommy's boy.

"well, that's a great question. liking someone can feel a bit different for everyone, but there are some common signs. do you have someone on your mind?" she asked, smiling warmly at her oldest son.

"maybe...kinda. i just want to know what it feels like" austin replied, thanking his medium-long hair for covering his blushing cheeks.

"okay, let's see. usually, when you like someone, you might find yourself thinking about them a lot. you might feel excited to see them or talk to them. sometimes, just chatting with them makes you happy or nervous in a good way. do you ever feel a little fluttery inside when you're talking to them?"

"yeah, sometimes" he said, thinking of all the times camille texted him

"that's a pretty good sign. you might also notice that you care about their opinions and want to make them laugh or smile. it's those little things that can show you have special feelings for someone. it's like you enjoy your conversations and want to talk to them more."

"that makes sense. it's kind of confusing, though." he said with a slight smile

"it can be. emotions are tricky, but the important thing is to trust yourself and take your time to understand how you feel. and remember, it's perfectly normal to feel this way. if you ever want to talk more about it, i'm here for you, okay?"

"thanks, mum."

"anytime, sweetie. i'm glad you asked." she said while passing a hand through austin's curls "dinner's almost ready. i'll call you, ok?" and with a last nod from austin, she left her son's bedroom.

austin kept thinking and repeating his mum's words over and over again. does he actually like camille? he knew he had a crush on her, but crush and like are two different things. he knew that camille is beautiful and talented and funny and determined and- ok, he definitely likes her.
