CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT!
. *. THE FALL SPIRIT WEEK . * .

────────────────────

Harvard-Westlake Upper School, Studio City - Los Angeles (Friday, September 15th, 2023 - 11:40am)

"cam, come on!" nicole whined, nudging me for what felt like the tenth time. "it's just a dance"

"no it's not, so just stop, i'm serious" i said, probably for the millionth time today. my head was starting to hurt from the whole thing..

fall spirit week is next week, and with that comes the 'golden hour gala'; our version of homecoming. every year, the girls at our school lose their minds over this dance, and this year, as seniors, it's supposed to be extra special. the thing is, i don't want to go with anyone. austin's in new zealand, and no matter how many guys ask me; seriously, i've lost count; i've rather just go solo.

"i get it," camila said, sliding into the conversation like she does with every argument i have with nicole. "but you know you're gonna have fun. plus, you've got all of us."

"exactly! like, what's better than going with your best friends and sisters?" ashlee added, looking up from her phone for a second. "we'll make fun of all the cheesy couples together."

brady popped his head in from behind, because he loves to randomly join conversations he wasn't part of. "and i'll make sure no one bothers you. bodyguard mode on." he flexed his arms dramatically, making us all roll our eyes.

"yeah, okay, brady," i laughed, shaking my head. "but really, i'm fine going alone. i just... i don't want to deal with the whole 'oh who are you going with' thing, you know?"

"dude, you've got guys from other schools trying to take you. like, who does that? you could run for homecoming queen at this point," daniela teased.

"and she'd win," ana added, sipping from her iced coffee. "but seriously, it's not about who you go with. it's about the vibe. we'll dance, we'll take over the photo booth, and then we can all go to in-n-out after."

"now that is the plan," asher said, nodding like he had the final word. "who cares about dates when you've got fries?"

"asher, you would," gabriel laughed.

"well, i'm in for the fries," jake said, draping an arm over mackenzie, who grinned up at him. "and maybe some dancing."

"it's gonna be fun, cam. and who knows, maybe austin will show up out of nowhere to sweep you off your feet," mia said with a playful smirk.

mia's comment made me laugh, but i noticed something as i looked over at nicole and mackenzie. there was a brief moment where they exchanged glances; one of those silent, telepathic conversations that only sisters can have.
