Alora

"Hey Alora, is everything alright-" The lieutenant began as we stopped at a red light.

"Do you think that this is some kind of joke? Don't lie to me you son of a bitch!" I yelled out in anger, my hands shaking.

There was a moment of silence before the person on the other end of the phone replied, "I'm... sorry"

"I'm sorry? None of this makes any sense. How could Arik... there's no way he would die!" I stated, feeling as tears threatened to escape my eyes.

The call soon ended and I was no longer able to hold tears in, sobs escaping from me.

"Alora!" The lieutenant called out in worry before pulling over on the side.

My chest felt heavy as I cried, the thought of my little brother being dead making it hard for me to even breath. I felt as he pulled me closer to him, gently soothing my back.

The pain was unreal... it felt as if I was going both death and blind all at once.

This had to be some awful nightmare.

Arik was all that I had. It's always been just the two of us ever since our parents abandoned us. No grandparents, relatives... we had no one to turn to.

He has always been my everything.

Flashback

Small sobs could be heard from Arik as he cried.

"Alora... I'm so sorry" He said while wiping the tears from his face.

I slowly looked at him from the bed, "If only I hadn't complained about the food... then they wouldn't have hurt you" He added as more tears streamed down his face.

I then sat up and placed a hand on the side of his face, brushing my the tears away. "You didn't do anything wrong Arik" I reassured him.

"They keep putting pecans in the food while knowing you're allergic. They shouldn't try to force that on you. So don't let this get you upset, it's just a few bruises. They'll heal before you know it, alright?" I asked him, smiling as he nodded head.

I was then surprised when he grabbed ahold of my hand, "When we grow up, I'll make sure no one ever hurts you again. I promise to protect you. So... just hold on a little longer"

Present - a few days later...

An unusual sound woke me up from my sleep. As I quickly sat up, my eyes landed on the picture of Arik and I.

The two of us were both in our uniform, Arik in his navy uniform while I was in my military uniform.

I got out of the bed and walked towards it, "Arik... you can't be dead. You're the reason why I'm here in the first place-" I began before the sound of a phone going off was heard.

I looked around as I tried to figure out where the sound was coming from. I checked all the drawers and the closet, but found nothing. As I neared the bed, I noticed how the sound was closer than before.

I quickly looked under the bed and used the flashlight from my phone, seeing that the sound was coming from a burner phone. Could it be him?

I then remembered the last time we met, he gave me this phone and told me to put it somewhere secluded. It had to be him!

Without wasting another second, I answered the phone. "Arik! Where are you? What the hell is going on?!" I rushed out.

There was a static sound coming from the other end before it soon cleared up, "A...Alora-" He began.
