Chapter 55
~ Niall ~
"Done! We finished it!" I cheered.
The boys and I finally finished building the crib, and honestly, it just gets me even more excited for this baby.
"Well, I guess it wouldn't have taken as long if we started by looking at the instruction." Harry said, everyone looking at me.
I scoffed and turned away from them, headed out the door.
The guys followed me to the kitchen where I kept a plastic cover for the crib.
Nina will kill me if I get paint on it, and with her hormones being out of whack, I literally think she would kill me.
I should actually go check on her.
"I'll be right back. Chill out for a bit." I told the guys.
After that, I walked upstairs to my room, seeing that the door was now partially opened.
I could hear quiet talking, so I just peeked my head in.
"How are you doing in there, baby girl? Daddy and I can't wait to see you."
Aw man, this is adorable.
Nina was standing in front of the mirror, talking to our little girl.
"I'm really happy that you're almost here."
I feel like I should walk in and tell her how beautiful this is, or maybe I should just wait and act like I didn't see anything.
"You're going to be such a beautiful baby. I already know it. Daddy and I haven't talked about a name yet, but I'm sure it'll fit you nicely."
Yeah, we should start thinking about a name.
Unless, we decide on a name when she's born, because you know how some babies look like they have a certain name.
It's complicated.
"You're going to feel so safe and protected. I promise you. Of course you'll have Daddy and I, and your aunties and uncles. We're all going to make you feel okay. None of us will let anything bad happen to you."
That sure is right.
I won't let anything happen to my little girl.
I've protected one of my princesses, haven't I?
"Daddy may seem harmless, but trust me, he can get feisty when he needs to. He'll keep you safe. But I reckon you'll be a Daddy's Girl."
I seem harmless?!
"I want you to know that you can always come to me, baby. I'll always be there for you. I don't know if I'll be as good of a parent as Daddy will be, but I'll try. I'd do anything for you. You come before me. You deserve the best because lately, everyone has been so happy. Uncle Harry has been happy because of you. I'm really happy. You lift our spirits, honey. So please, come to me if you need anything. I'll always be there because I love you."
I figured now was a good time to pop in the room, so I did.
Nina turned to me quickly, realizing I was there.
"How long were you standing there?" She asked.
"Long enough to hear how perfect of a Mommy you'll be." I said, engulfing her in a hug.
She laid her head on my shoulder, shaking her head lightly.
"And also to hear that I seem harmless. What's that about?" I added.
She laughed, and it was one of the most beautiful laughs I've ever heard come out of her.
"C'mon, you're my little teddy bear." She said.
I am offended.
"I'm a teddy bear, huh? Do teddy bears have you begging for more, make you feel so good that you call them Daddy? Do they know where just to touch you?" I whispered in her ear, my hot breaths making goosebumps form on her skin.
"S-sometimes you get f-feisty."
I smirked against her skin, knowing the effects I have on her.
She pulled back, blush evident on her cheeks.
"Did you guys finish the crib? And if so, did you cover it so we can paint?" She asked.
I nodded.
"Yes, we finished. I was just going to cover it up after I checked on you." I said. "I'll go do it now. You can head downstairs with the boys if you want."
She kissed me quickly, making her way downstairs.
I grabbed the bag I left out by the door, walking across the hall to the baby room.
I've got chills just waking in.
Very soon I'll be walking in here to check on my daughter, or to get her from her nap.
It feels quite surreal.
I grabbed the masking tape from a box and made my way over to the crib.
It's really nice looking; Nina picked it out, of course.
I had questioned her when she was sticking her arm through the bars.
She said if she could fit her arm through freely, there was an issue.
So then I understood.
I taped on the cover so I knew no paint would come in contact with it.
Deciding not to waste any more time, I quickly went downstairs and saw Nina pouring some blueberries in a bowl.
"Princess? What are you doing?" I asked, my eyebrow raised.
"What does it look like? I'm getting blueberries." She said, putting the rest away.
"To...eat?"
She gave me a look that said, "are you serious right now?"
"No, Niall. I'm going to pelt them at the wall to paint the nursery." She said sarcastically. "Of course I'm going to eat them."
Hormones.
"But, you hate blueberries, baby."
She went back to the refrigerator, pulling out the whipped cream.
"Yes, but our baby girl wants them."
Well, that explains a lot.
I guess the cravings have started.
I didn't think it was true that pregnant women crave things they normally hate, but I was wrong apparently.
Nina then took the cap off the whipped cream and put some on top of the blueberries.
Okay, now this is weird.
Nina almost never puts whipped cream on her fruit.
What the hell is going on?
"Does she want that too? Cause I know you don't normally do that." I said.
She turned to me and her bottom lip started to tremble as her eyes became glossy.
"D-do you think I'm fat for craving this, Niall? I was trying to ignore it but I couldn't and I know I'm getting bigger but am I getting too big? Are my thighs too big?" She began to cry.
I instantly pulled her into my arms, rubbing her back softly.
These hormones are difficult.
"No, princess. You're perfect. I was just stupid for asking." I said softly.
I saw Louis peek his head around the corner, as he was confused to hear Nina crying.
"Mood swings," I mouthed to him.
He nodded, seeming to understand, and went back to the guys.
Nina pulled away after a minute or so, and wiped her tears away.
"I'm sorry. I just can't control it." She apologized.
"Don't be sorry, Nina. I get it. It's okay."
I smiled to reassure her that her actions were okay.
"C'mon. Let's go talk with the boys before we paint."
I led her out to the living room and she sat down...with her blueberries topped with whipped cream.<><><><><><><><><><><><><>
"Okay, we can start now." I said, sticking down the last piece of masking tape on the ceiling.
Don't want to get any of the paint on there.
Nina squealed a little and picked up a roller brush, getting it wet with paint.
The shade of pink was...difficult to choose.
It was "I want this" and "oh, no, I don't like that" and even "absolutely not. My baby will not be in a room with that color".
But Nina and I eventually picked a color that we both loved.
It's not too pale, but it's also not too bright.
Just perfect.
The white and grey wasn't that hard.
It's pretty basic anyways.
I joined in with Nina, beginning to paint the wall also.
It was quiet for a little, just the soft strokes could be heard.
"Do you think she'll like this design?" She asked.
"I'm sure she'll love it."
It's crazy to think that I'll have to accommodate for my own child now.
It truly hasn't kicked in yet that I'm going to be a dad.
After what I've learned and witnessed happen to Nina from her dad, I swore I'd never lay a finger on my daughter to hurt her in any sort of way.
Never would I want her to go through the pain her mommy went through.
I've practically failed at being a dad already with the miscarriage.
"What do you think she'll look like? I can really ask that now, knowing that she's truly coming." She asked.
I know she's a little anxious for the arrival and that's why she's asking a bunch of questions.
It's just cute.
"Your dimples for sure. Your lips, at least I hope because yours are far better looking than mine."
Nina scoffed and kissed me.
"Your lips are perfect. They make me feel safe so they're perfect." She said. "But I think she'll have your beautiful blue eyes. Not my blue, but yours. And I honestly don't even know what her hair color would be."
"I reckon she'll have my brown hair." I said.
Nina smiled, putting the brush down to tie up her hair.
"Is that so, Daddy?"
The way she calls me that makes me want her so badly.
I nodded, quickly looking away.
A silence fell over the room again, until Nina asked a question I never thought would come out of her mouth.
"Do you think she'll be okay with having only your parents as grandparents? Do you think she'll wonder why she's different from most kids when she's older?"
It sort of broke my heart a little.
Her voice sounded so weak when she talked.
"I'm sure she'll be happy that she has my parents. And when she gets older and wonders, we'll tell her that she's just that cool. We can explain to her about her other grandma when she gets older, too." I said, the last part coming out quietly.
I don't want her knowing about Tom, but unfortunately, one day she'll be curious and find out.
But he will NEVER be apart of my daughter's life.
I won't give him the satisfaction of causing so much pain to this family, and then being able to see mine and Nina's daughter.
Never.
"You always know what to say." She said. "Thank you for that."
I'm glad I can help her.
It makes me feel good.
After a little while, Nina and I had finished painting the walls pink and grey, and all we had left to do was the design.
It's going to be a tree that will be painted on the wall her crib will go against.
It was actually my idea, very shocking, I know.
I thought it would look nice, and oh boy, you should've seen the look on Nina's face when I brought it up.
She was beyond happy and excited.
But of course, Nina and I are not the best artists, so we asked Zayn to help us out.
Let's be honest, he could do a better job than any of us.
Nina still wanted to paint, though, so that's what we did.
Zayn should be coming over soon to do it for us.
"I am so beyond tired. Can we go to sleep now?" Nina asked, her innocent voice coming out.
Wow, she's really tired.
"Mhm, c'mon, baby."
Before she could go far, I picked her up, and she cuddled up to me.
When I placed her down in our room, she changed into her pajamas, as did I.
"Go ahead and get in bed, I'm just going to make sure the doors are locked and the lights are off." I said.
Once I knew everything was turned off, I went back to Nina, turning off our light and crawling into bed.
I pulled the covers over us, but not before kissing her tummy.
"Can you sing to me?" She asked.
I nodded and spooned her, placing my hand on her bump, and kissing her shoulder.
"You look so wonderful in your dress. I love your hair like that. The way it falls on the side of your neck. Down your shoulders and back." I sang quietly.
I knew she'd like it, being as it was our first dance song at our wedding.
"Oh!" Nina gasped, turning onto her back.
I stopped suddenly, panic setting in.
"What's wrong? How's the baby? Are you okay?"
She guided my hand to one area on her bump.
"Wait, sing again."
I continued with the song, but didn't get very far.
"She's kicking again. She must love hearing you sing."
My heart literally went insane at hearing those words.
My baby girl can hear me singing and she likes it.
I can't grasp this entirely.
Tears formed in my eyes as I felt more kicks.
"I love you." I whispered to Nina.
"I love you, too."
And I sure as heck love our daughter, too.
