After months Yamato was always doing his duties killing demons left and right, Until.. Yamato received tragic news Sabito and Makomo had met their end during the Final Selection. For two whole days, Yamato sat in the corner of his house, staring at the paper with the unfortunate news, without eating anything. He was still there when Gyomei Himejima visited.

"Yamato," Gyomei's voice was calm yet concerned.

"Gyomei-san?" Yamato's voice was barely a whisper.

"Oyakata-sama asked me to check on you. He was worried."

"This is all my fault... that Final Selection again..." Yamato clenched his fists so hard they started to bleed. Tears welled up in his eyes. "They were good kids, Gyomei-san! They didn't deserve this life. They deserved to have a family, a life... not this hell."

Gyomei sat next to him, placing a comforting hand on Yamato's shoulder. "Yamato, please remember that although you are powerful, you are still but a child."

Yamato wiped away his tears. "Yeah, I know. What did Kagaya-san want?"

"Oyakata-sama wants us to investigate the southwest village. My crow is scouting it now. Do you want to join me? It might take your mind off things."

Yamato stood, his resolve hardening. "Gyomei-san, this will never leave my mind. I will no longer let this get me down, Kibutsuji will get what's coming to him. I'll personally make sure of that!" He donned his Demon Slayer outfit, his mother's haori, and strapped his Nichirin sword to his side.

Yamato's Kasugai Crow, usually perched on his head, flew ahead to lead the way. Yamato and Gyomei walked until sundown, arriving at a town where they saw smoke rising from a large mansion.

"Yamato!" Gyomei called out. "Head towards that mansion. I'll find other civilians."

Yamato darted towards the mansion and saw a demon tearing through the torso of an adult man, a woman lying on the ground, and two girls hugging each other with their eyes closed in terror.

"Water Breathing, Second Form: Water Wheel!" Yamato shouted, cutting the arm of the demon.

The demon cried out in pain as Yamato kicked it to the ground, stomping on its mouth. "Water Breathing, Eighth Form: Waterfall Basin!" Yamato's sword cut vertically, cleanly decapitating the demon. He then approached the two girls.

"Hey, you two alright?" Yamato asked, kneeling beside them.

The girls opened their eyes to see Yamato's concerned face. "You girls okay?" he asked, flinching at their tear-streaked faces. He couldn't and wouldn't give up. This was happening to everyone, and he vowed never to let it happen again. He sheathed his sword and bowed deeply.

"I'm very sorry, you two. If only I got here sooner. Do you have names?"

"I-I'm Kanae... and this is my little sister, Shinobu," the older girl managed to say.
