"I am Alice, Alice Potter."

Chapter 2 ~ The sorting hat and the tutor

"Potter? Like in Harry Potter?" Ginny asked curiously with a strange look on her face. She was on the edge of her seat, eyeing me up and down.

"Who is Harry Potter?" I asked confused. She was looking at me with disbelief. I read some of the history books about Hogwarts, but never before had I heard of someone named Harry Potter. Should I know this guy?

"He is a very dear friend of mine," Ginny explained, "he probably has the same last name by coincidence then." she said thoughtfully.

"Yes that's probably it," I replied, "I was an only child." Or at least I had always thought I was an only child. The orphanage I grew up in had always been my home until yesterday. They told me that my parents had died and they found me left alone. But never had they mentioned a sibling or other relatives so I always assumed that I must have been an only child.

A few minutes later Luna returned and my two new friends were explaining to me what I could expect at Hogwarts. They told me about moving stairs, ghosts floating around, annoying professors, secret parties. It sounded...amazing! I was happy to be out of the orphanage. I had always felt a little different than the others there. But I never knew what it was. Finally I was getting the excitement in my life that I had always been waiting for.

When everyone went into the great hall, a teacher with emerald clothes and a high hat stopped me. "Professor Dumbledore wishes to see you, before you join the feast," she said with a stern look on her face, "it's about your department."

I read about the four different houses in the history of Hogwarts. I had determined that as long as I wasn't put into slytherin I would be happy. They didn't seem to be such a friendly lot from what I've read. I followed her for several minutes until we reached Dumbledore's office. I would never be able to find my way in Hogwarts, that I knew for sure. This place was an absolute maze. I knocked and heard a friendly voice ask us to enter.

"Miss Potter," he said with a curious voice, "at last we finally meet."

The other professor left and I made myself comfortable in one of the chairs across his desk. He took a black hat and put in front of me. Not so sure what to expect I looked at this hat. Perhaps it was going to explode, or catch fire, or disappear. Was this a test? Should I show some magic? I felt nervous, I wasn't very good yet. I barely knew any spells.

"Well...put it on your head," Dumbledore encouraged me when I did nothing, "we have to make haste, the first years are waiting."

I putt the hat on and waited nervously until it started moving. "Hmmm," the hat came to life. I was shocked, it....talked. "Very interesting," the hat continued, "I clearly see some slytherin in you, it would suit you perfectly." it said. But all I could hope for was not to be put in slytherin. "Not slytherin? Perhaps you are right. But where should I put you then? You have a great deal of courage, Gryffindor would be pleased with you. Let me think. You are a fast learner and very loyal person who steps no challenge out of the way."

"RAVENCLAW" the hat yelled. Then it was silent and lifeless again like nothing ever happened.

"Very well," Dumbledore exclaimed while clapping his hands, "all settled then, I will lead you to the great hall where you can sit with the rest of your new house."

"I'm so glad you are in ravenclaw, just like me," Luna said smiling, "maybe we can be friends, I don't have so many of them."

"Of course! I'd love to be your friend!" I told her. She was really nice and I was lucky to have someone to show me around. Throughout the rest of dinner we just talked about all kinds of stuff and found out how much we had in common.
