Chapter 23 :

Pansy looked at me with disbelief in her eyes, like she expected me to tell her that I was just joking. When I didn’t, she sighed and came over to me. She let herself slide against the wall and sat down on the cold stone floor. I followed her example anxiously. She sighed again before speaking. “You spend your Christmas holidays with Draco? You kissed him a few times?” she asked me, like she was still waiting for me to contradict her.

“Yes I did.” I said quietly. I didn’t dare to look at her, feeling deeply ashamed. Stupid feelings!

“You do know that Draco isn’t exactly a good guy for you right?” she asked. I had expected her to be mad and to shout at me but she seemed abnormally friendly.

I laughed without humor. “Believe me,” I said, “I know that Malfoy isn’t a good guy but I can’t help it. Whenever we’re alone he can be so nice to me, but I know that he’s an obnoxious jerk for most of the time. I wish my feelings would go away, but I guess that takes time.”

She nodded. “I understand you know,” she told me to my surprise. “You don’t have to be afraid that I’d tell somebody. I meant it when I said that you’re secret is safe with me. Even if it’s Draco you were talking about.” She smiled slightly at me, making her face so much prettier than with her usual poker face.

“Thank you!” I never expected Pansy to be friendly to me but somehow I trusted her. I just hoped that she was sincere, that she wouldn’t stab me in the back. “Well, since you know who my guy is I think it’s only fair that I know who yours is.” I remembered Pansy telling me about the boy she loved. The feeling was mutual, which is great, but she had the devastating problem that her parents forced her into an arranged marriage with a much older man.

When I asked her this; a little blush appeared on her face. “I don’t know…” she started uncertainly. I could tell that she was nervous, as she kept fidgeting around.

“You can trust me as well you know” I told her truthfully, “I’d never tell anyone.”

“I trust you.” she decided resolutely. “You know him pretty well actually. We have to keep our relationship a secret since I’ll have to marry a stranger soon but I love him with all my heart.”

“Who? Who is it that you love?” I wasn’t going to lie about the fact that I was curious as hell at this point.

“Blaise.” She looked at me with doubtful eyes, and I’m sure that I held the same confused expression as she had had when she saw Draco almost kissing me.

“Blaise?” I asked, just to double check. She nodded in a confirming manner. “Well, this is certainly unexpected.” I had to let this information sink in for a moment. Suddenly a memory of Malfoy Manor invaded my mind. Blaise had told me several times that he needed to talk to me about something personal, but he never got the chance to do it. It bet he wanted to tell me about Pansy.

“I know. But as you and Draco, we can never be together,” she said, her eyes turning sad.

I sighed at the depressing thought. “Why is this so damn complicated?” She looked at me with an understanding look in her eyes. She suddenly turned towards me and held out her hand. “Let’s pinky promise to keep each others secrets safe,” she told me. I nodded eagerly and sealed the promise.
