❈ Helena was really getting tired of being separated from the group.
The entire class of telkhines charged across the bridge towards her. She ran for the middle of the platform, surprising the four elder sea demons so much they dropped the red-hot blade. It was about two metres long and curved like a crescent moon.
Helena did not want to be anywhere near that why they had finished making it.
The elder demons got over their surprise quickly. There were four ramps leading off the platform, and before she could dash in any direction each of them had covered an exit.
The tallest one snarled, "What do we have here? A daughter of Ares?"
"Yes," another growled. "I can smell the chaos in her blood."
Helena tightened her grip on Ruby and took a breath.
"Strike down one of us, demigod," the third demon said, "and the rest of us shall tear you to shreds. Your father betrayed us. He took our gift and said nothing as we were cast into the pit. We will see him sliced to pieces. He and all the other Olympians."
Helena's gaze flickered to different corners of the room trying to formulate a plan. Percy was safe. She had wanted him to get out safely, and she hoped he wasn't being stubborn and waiting on the other side of that door for her. But now it was dawning on her that this might be the place she would die. She had just gotten back to Percy and was being torn away from him again.
Helena had seen the sparks of anger ignite in his eyes when she pushed him through the door, she just hoped he wasn't too angry with her.
The young telkhines were at the platform now, too, snarling and waiting to see how their four elders would deal with her.
The tallest telkhine spoke, "Let us see how strong he is. Let us see how long it takes him to burn!"
He scooped some lava from the nearest furnace. It set his fingers ablaze, but this didn't seem to bother him at all. The other elder telkhines did the same. The first one threw a glop of molten rock at her and set her torn pants on fire. Two more splattered across her chest. Helena used one hand to swat at her clothes, pushing the lava off without a care.
"Your father's nature protects you," one said. "Makes you hard to burn. But not impossible, youngling. Not impossible."
They threw more lava at her and soon her whole body was on fire.
Fire had never hurt Helena. It often played crucial roles in war, flaming weapons, catapults, and as weaponry evolved gunpowder, bombs and arson at all levels. Fire was essential to war meaning it fell under her fathers domain but as the demons threw more lava on to her body it started to warm and then burn.
The pain was worse than anything she had ever felt. She was being consumed. She dropped ruby and crumpled to the floor. Helena heard the sea demon children howling in delight.
It was then Helena heard her fathers voice echo in her mind. Use the fire, spark.
Use the fire, she could do that. Her father had taught her young to not be afraid of it, to control and harness it. She took a deep breath and felt the fire in her veins flicker to life.
Helena would not die by elements of her fathers domain. She would not die here. She wouldn't die here, she couldn't; Not when she still needed to ask Annabeth, why? Not when she still needed to talk to Percy. Not until she knew that he meant those words and they weren't just in the moment. Not when she had promised him she would always come back to him.
Let your chaos explode, my trophy. She had always thrived in chaos so who was she to deny the voice?
She felt a tugging sensation in her gut. The lava around her burned brighter as her own fire flickered to life. She took a breath and everything stilled in a way that felt like time itself was holding its breath. And then, she let go.
She would never be able to describe what happened to her siblings that asked her once she made it back to camp. She had tried but failed.
There was an explosion, this whirlwind of heated power simultaneously that exploded from her and the very floor she stood on cracked and groaned. Fire burned and steam gathered in the small cavern but it could only take so much pressure before it needed to be released. She was still burning when she shot up from the heart of the volcano in a huge explosion, just a singular piece of rubble thrown free by millions of pounds of pressure.
The view from the clouds, she could see everything, yet nothing at all. Helena felt like she was suspended in the air but quickly, far too quickly she began her plummet towards the earth. What goes up must come down after all.
She was heading straight down, falling towards an island. Until she wasn't.
The last thing she remembered before losing consciousness was a wind knocking into her veering her, tugging her in the opposite direction.
Helena felt her father roaring in her head before the world went dark and she knew. She knew that she was supposed to go to that island. She wasn't supposed to go this way but it seemed even fate wasn't able to predict how much the time wanted her.
And what time wanted, he got.
