Defence Against the Dark Arts was yet, another one of Emerson's favourite classes, until Dolores Jane Umbridge came along and destroyed her interest and passion for it. If it wasn't Mattheo ruining Potions for her, it was the toad dressed in pink ruining Defence Against the Dark Arts. She couldn't catch a break.

Their first lesson was meant to be after Potions on Thursday, but apparently, two unknown red-headed individuals who looked identical decided to slip the essence of one of their Skiving Snackboxes, a Puking Pastille, in her afternoon tea. Not having the antidote readily available, she was indisposed for their lesson while Madam Pomfrey tried to stop the constant flow of sickness, giving the Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs a spare period. Emerson found it funny that Fred and George chose that particular time where they had a spare period to pull that prank on Umbridge, knowing fully well that Emerson and Olivia were in that class, and would be able to spend their free time with them. Olivia tried to deny that it was intentional, but Emerson knew that it was, at least on George's part. He was enjoying spending time with her. She could see it in his smile as they sat by the lake, laughing and chatting for the remainder of the afternoon while they spent their spare period together.

By the time their double period of Defence Against the Dark Arts rolled around on Friday morning, Umbridge had made a speedy recovery, much to their dismay. The twins were never actually caught because she could not prove that it was them or their product which caused her sickness, so they were never punished. It was presumed that she had food poisoning. It did not stop her however, from taking out her mood on their class that morning.

"Well, good morning class!" Umbridge called. "Wands away and quills out, please." With her own wand, Umbridge tapped the board. Words appeared on the board at once:

Defence Against the Dark Arts, A Return to Basic Principles.

"Well now, your teaching in this subject has been rather disrupted and fragmented, hasn't it?" Umbridge stated and a few people nodded their heads in agreement. Emerson looked at her questionably. It was common knowledge that no teacher in the Defence Against the Dark Arts position lasted longer than a year, which meant they would hopefully say goodbye to Umbridge soon enough. "The constant changing of teachers, many of whom do not seem to have followed any Ministry approved curriculum, has unfortunately resulted in you being far below the standard we would expect to see in your O.W.L. year. You will be pleased to know, however, that these problems are now to be rectified. We will be following a carefully structured, theory-centred, Ministry-approved course of defensive magic this year. Copy down the following, please."

She waved her wand and the first message vanished, replaced by:

Course Aims:

1. Understanding the principles underlying defensive magic.

2. Learning to recognise situations in which defensive magic can legally be used.

3. Placing the use of defensive magic in a context for practical use.
