Chapter 11
Emerson did not know what it was like to ever get detention, and she was quite content with the thought of never finding out for the remainder of her schooling life. She was never given any detentions in her entire four years of schooling, unless you can count the one that she was meant to have with Umbridge recently, but never eventuated.
She was a Ravenclaw with an unblemished record, and Ravenclaw students rarely got detentions, due to the fact that they were typically quite studious and rule-abiding. It was something that they were told in their First-Year from their Prefects when they first arrived in the Ravenclaw Common Room; that they should keep their heads down at all times and manage the teacher's high expectations instead. With an air of pride, Emerson was one step ahead of her classmates, because she rarely managed to get house points taken away from her either. She was truly an all-round stellar example of a true Ravenclaw. She was the embodiment of what a Ravenclaw should be: Studious, disciplined, and an avid follower of the rules.
Until her path crossed with Mattheo Riddle.
Her detention with Snape was the first ever detention that she received, and she wasn't particularly sure how she should feel about it. Naturally, this resulted in her feeling a whirlwind of emotions afterwards.
When she heard Snape's chilling words about the detention that she would have the following evening with Mattheo, she froze in her seat. Her anger towards Mattheo dissipated instantly. Snape didn't say anything else, other than they would spend the detention re-brewing the Strengthening Solution for their next class, despite the fact that he had already failed them. The Strengthening Solution took at least two weeks to stew after first brewing, which meant they had to work on it again during another class in the next two weeks.
Even though the class still had ten or so minutes left, Emerson did nothing except stare at the barren surface of the desk in front of her. Even after the class ended, she was still trying to come to grips with what had happened. She couldn't believe that she failed. It was the first time that it ever happened to her. That sort of over brewed potion, which was useless earned herself a failure grade, which she had never obtained before. Emerson had never achieved anything less than an Exceeds Expectations in her classes and she always got an Outstanding in Potions. There was dispiriting feeling associated with achieving anything less than perfect in one of her best classes.
More importantly, she was disappointed in herself for allowing the situation and argument between herself and that foul Slytherin devil get as far and extreme as it did. She should've just done what she was good at, which was ignoring him. She managed to ignore him for weeks on end, but since she finally gave in and spoke to him when she punched him, she struggled to go back to it. His entire presence and being antagonised her. At the very least, she forced herself not to speak to Mattheo for the remainder of their double Potions class. It did not matter though; he did not speak to her either, which made it quite easy.
