The hours leading up to New Year's Eve were filled with excitement and nerves. Emerson couldn't help but wonder what the night with Mattheo would bring. She hadn't seen Mattheo in the past day since their last encounter in the school kitchens, but now she was about to spend New Year's Eve alone with him in one of the most secluded parts of Hogwarts.

She wasn't quite sure what to expect tonight. Mattheo had never been one to make plans that didn't involve some form of trouble, but that was before she began to actually get to know him. Now, she was drawn by a strange curiosity and an inexplicable pull towards someone she once considered to be her enemy. It felt surreal that she was even going to meet Mattheo, of all people, at the top of the Astronomy tower to celebrate New Year's Eve together. The Mattheo Emerson thought she knew would have mocked her for days on end for being so easily swayed, but there was something different about him now.

The cold winter air nipped at Emerson's skin as she left the Ravenclaw Common Room and wandered through the dark corridors. She successfully avoided any teachers or prefects with her ears pricked for the sound of approaching footsteps, but all she could hear was her heart racing at a million miles per hour in her chest. Each step brought her closer to the unknown, to whatever Mattheo was planning for New Year's Eve.

Emerson climbed the stairs to the Astronomy Tower, her breath leaving her mouth in visible clouds. She couldn't hear any noises from above her head, making her wonder whether Mattheo was actually upstairs waiting for her, but she had a strong feeling that he was. She knew he was being sincere when he asked her to join him. He wouldn't stand her up. Nonetheless, the silence only added to the nervous flutter in Emerson's stomach.

When she reached the top, the sight that greeted her took the Ravenclaw by complete surprise. The suggestion of spending New Year's Eve with Mattheo was shocking enough, but she didn't expect him to somehow create a cozy little spot for the two of them amidst the cold stone of the tower. A thick, soft blanket was spread out on the floor, with pillows haphazardly thrown on top. Mattheo was standing next to the spot, leaning against the wall with a bottle of Firewhiskey in his hand. The sky above was clear, revealing a blanket of stars that seemed to stretch endlessly.

He looked up as she approached, his dark eyes immediately taking in the sight of her. She wasn't wearing anything special, Olivia wasn't around to force her into something over the top. She wore a pair of jeans and a half-zip sweater, with her hair neatly tied into a ponytail but it still made Mattheo look at her up and down. His back straightened ever so slightly, a small smirk tugging at the corners of his lips. "You actually came," He mused, his tone teasing but there was a hint of relief in his voice as well. Perhaps, he too wondered whether she would stand him up as well.

Emerson smiled back, feeling a little more at ease as she took in the sight of the space he'd set up. She didn't expect him to go to any effort whatsoever, especially for her. It was unexpectedly thoughtful. "Of course, I did," She replied, stepping closer to him. She noticed that he was wearing a navy jumper with jeans. His hair was messily curled, as it always was, but so perfectly over his forehead. "Besides, did I actually have a choice? I don't recall you giving me the option to say no."
