After their conversation in the empty classroom, Emerson and Mattheo had finally gone back to their usual interactions and insults of disdain and detest for each other whenever their paths crossed. Typically, it usually occurred during Potions where they were forced to sit next to one another but Emerson couldn't help but notice that he seemed to frequent her routes more and more as they crossed paths in the hallways and corridors. It was as if he memorised her entire lesson timetable so that he could accidentally appear in the same corridors that she walked through between classes.
Another thing was the classic stares from Mattheo. She knew he had a major staring problem, and it drove her insane. When she did see him from a distance, his eyes always followed her every move. She was like a micro-organism under a spectacle being studied.
His eyes followed her everywhere. He always had an eye on her, whether it was across the corridor, during meal times or sitting across from her in class.
When they were in closer proximity, they typically fought back and forth. Their encounters were like a cat and mouse, rotating between attack and deflect. To those who were frequently present due to association, being Olivia, Theo and Enzo, they stepped back and enjoyed the amusement. Enzo had recently started to carry popcorn in his bag so that he could have a cheeky snack while snickering quietly. Her defiant nature challenged him, and it seemed to ignite a fire within him that he couldn't ignore.
It was mid-November, the school year travelling at a fast pace like a steam train. On one particular day, the morning sun cast a warm, golden glow over the four house tables in the Great Hall. Emerson sat with Harry and Hermione during breakfast, her legs neatly crossed underneath the table and her chin propped up on her interlaced fingers. Ron was madly trying to finish an assignment that he'd forgotten about, which was due in thirty minutes so it was just the three of them today.
Her brown hair was carefully braided down her back, courtesy of Olivia who woke up that day with a random desire to style Emerson's hair differently this morning. In the words of Olivia, she was sick of seeing her best friend with the same ponytail every single day. Emerson, who rarely styled her hair down and not at all since Cedric died, negotiated her from styling her hair in a down style to a braid. She felt as if it was more appropriate for school.
Olivia was sitting nearby with Fred and George, her fingers intertwined with George's. The new couple were thoroughly enjoying the freshness, excitement and joy of their relationship. Olivia could not be happier, and George could not be more in love. Even though they weren't in the same House and they did not share any classes together at all, it did not prevent them from spending most of their free time together. Their schedules were busy, with George working on Weasley's Wizard Wheezes and Olivia studying but they always made the time for each other.
Emerson hadn't minded her friend's lacking presence at all. The downside was that even though her friend's time was split equally some days between with her best friend and her boyfriend, she hated being alone with her thoughts. Whenever she was alone, her mind thought of Cedric. It was either about him when he was alive, or him when he was dead. The latter involved the mental image of his lifeless body slumped across the grass and the echo of the band's music playing in the background as if nothing awful happened. If it wasn't that, it was the once cherished memories that reminded her of what was now lost to her. She still hadn't been able to force herself to go to their private spots where they shared laughter and kisses together. It was far too painful.
