Hogwarts during the Christmas holidays is a magical and festive sight for anyone to behold. It was an experience that every student treasured, even if they didn't enjoy the Christmas season that much. The magic of the castle seemed to be more alive than usual, with every nook and cranny of the castle adorned with festive decorations that sparkled and twinkled, creating a sense of wonder and warmth, despite the cold winter air.
The Great Hall was transformed with twelve towering Christmas trees that nearly touched the ceiling, decorated by Professor Flitwick as he always did with everything from glittering icicles, vibrant tinsel, large baubles and tiny, enchanted fairies that tittered and flew around in the branches. The enchanted ceiling reflected a snowy winter wonderland, with fake snow that fell on occasion to add to the effect. Even garlands of holly and mistletoe were hung and draped from the rafters of the Great Hall, adding to the merry ambience.
In the Ravenclaw Common Room, the fireplace was constantly roaring with welcoming flames. Professor Flitwick, who absolutely adored Christmas as a time of merry and joy, also added a Christmas tree in the centre, its branches heavy with ornaments.
Outside, the castle grounds were covered in a fresh thick blanket of snow, which became a winter playground. A lot of the students were relishing in the winter activities on a daily basis, which included snowball fights, sledding, and building snowmen. For those brave ones, they even ice skated across the Black Lake if it froze over completely. The grand trees of the Forbidden Forest were cloaked in snow, giving off an even more mysterious and alluring aura than usual.
The days leading up to Christmas Day at Hogwarts were always filled with a quiet yet odd stillness. The usual hustle and bustle of the castle's hallways had given way to an almost eerie silence as most students left and returned home for the holidays. There was about twenty students left at the school, which was barely enough to fill one table at the Great Hall. The corridors, normally alive with chatter and laughter, felt like a complete ghost town.
One of the students left behind was Emerson. All of her friends, Olivia, Fred, George, Harry, Ron and Hermione, left to go home for the Christmas holidays. Even the Ravenclaws in her year went home. There weren't that many people left at the school at all. She didn't even get the opportunity to say goodbye to Harry and the Weasley's. Apparently, they left randomly on the night before everyone else without saying goodbye to anyone. Even Olivia didn't know George was leaving, so something must've happened for them to leave so abruptly.
Emerson could've gone home from the Christmas holidays if she truly wanted but her home would've been empty and quiet anyway. Her mum already sent a letter by owl in the lead up to the holidays, saying that she will be working at the Ministry of Magic throughout the holidays, and wishing her a merry Christmas. It was the same letter that she received every year, the wording changed ever so slightly so it wasn't an exact copy and paste.
