With their new mutual agreement in place, Mattheo and Emerson settled into a delicate balance between public enemies and secretive friends. The change between them was subtle, but only noticeable to them. No one was none the wiser.

In public, they maintained their façade of sworn enemies. Every single time they crossed paths that week, they exchanged sharp and biting insults and glares that seemed genuine to anyone watching, including Olivia, Theo and Enzo. Because it was put on, and therefore slightly exaggerated from both of them, their friends actually found it more amusing than usual.

But underneath the surface, there was a secret language that only they seemed to understand. It was much easier to listen to the other's snarky insults and taunts when it was shortly followed with a comforting or amusing smile when the Professor turned their back or their friends were no longer paying attention. In the crowded hallways and during meals, their eyes would hold each other's stare. Occasionally, they would share a fleeting smile or nod between them when no one else was looking, and that's the way they liked it.

In Potions class, where they were often seated together, the interesting charade continued. Emerson caught his eye more than once during Potions class as they sat next to each other. His lips were constantly fighting the urge to twitch into a smile which she barely managed to suppress. She couldn't deny the thrill that came with their little game, pretending to loathe each other while sharing something that no one else could see. It was fun, sharing this private friendship that only they knew about.

Mattheo also found himself drawn to the secret glances and the way her voice softened when she whispered something that was meant only for him. He felt a strange kind of satisfaction whenever he managed to coax a smile out of her, even if it was just a fleeting one. It was an odd experience, this mixture of tension and camaraderie, but he found himself looking forward to their shared moments more than he ever would have admitted.

"You call that a potion? It looks more like dragon bile," Mattheo sneered during Potions, his voice loud enough to carry across the room. Theo and Olivia both rolled their eyes. They were back at it again.
